You should be fine with those.

I have a bit of an edit to do on the How To regarding resistances - will get to it on the weekend.

Cheers, SB

That's funny you saying 929 coils as all sets I have ever purchased were from late
model 1000 RR's !

If the last 4 digits after 129700 are:

4840 they are CBR1000
3991 - 929
4510 - CBR600
4400 - GSX-R

I used the 4840 sticks on my bike
Don't know if the CBR600 sticks will fit on a 1000

I used ebay pics from model specific listings to gather that info

Oooops! Sorry Sprock - my mistake.

Ajax sniffing again! Might take up TK's suggestion and try Toilet Duck.

The answer is no. The reason for the relay is to bypass the inadequate small coil power wires and use a larger coil power wire to carry more current to the coils. The small wires will cause a voltage drop where as the large one will not have such a voltage drop off. The relay is energized from the time the key is turned on, to the time it is turned off. There is no delay as it is on the entire time the bike is running.

The coils are setup transformers. Higher voltages arc further than lower voltages. So stepping up higher voltages is the goal. When the charging system is working properly, you get something like 14 volts on the system. I'm just guessing that these old coils may be stepping 14v to 20,000v and that's a minimal voltage.

So that's around 1,500v step up for each volt to the coils. A drop in say 2v would produce a 18,000v arc. As the voltage drops so will the plug gap to get the arc. 18,000v is low for spark plug needs.

Modern coils are producing 40k to 100kv. I am guessing that the stick coils are producing around 60kv and a relay is simply not needed.

I'm running '07 coils. Based on the above, should I be gapping to '07 spec?

No worries Seb - was just sayin' - yeah I think gapping them to 07 would be no harm at all at all imo

Next question. Should I be running the plug spec'd for these '07 coils and their output?

I'd keep em stock spec and in the same heat range altho' I'm not necessarily
practicing what I 'm preaching here as I went with new old stock splitfire plugs
in one of mine and have iridiums (stock spec) in the other two - the splitfires give
a whopping great big spark , are a slightly hotter plug - so I may just put them
in the other two as they seem to spark well with nice clean burning residue.......
not really helping to answer your question tho am I
