Stick coils for the CBR1000F?
That's how we use to hot wire cars of the past (Get it, Hot wire?). Pop the unsecured hood of an older car, put a jumper from BAT to +coil side and jump the BAT to +starter relay. Back then the points broke ground and you were off and running. Locking steering wheels and shifters followed and made it harder to steel things.
But anyway, perhaps what I posted before makes more sense now.
When the charging system is working properly, you get something like 14 volts on the system. I'm just guessing that these old coils may be stepping 14v to 20,000v and that's a minimal voltage.
So that's around 1,500v step up for each volt to the coils. A drop in say 2v would produce a 18,000v arc. As the voltage drops so will the plug gap to get the arc. 18,000v is low for spark plug needs.
Modern coils are producing 40k to 100kv. I am guessing that the stick coils are producing around 60kv and a relay is simply not needed.

As soon as I looked at that schematic and realized it was different from the one I had been referring too alot of this thread made alot more sense!
Absolutely, but the discussion was not on the coils but on a relay mod for the coils (kind of took the thread sideways).
Well, if it helps Jarvid, one of the first things I do to the US Import 1987/88 CBR1000F I just picked up will be fitting stick coils.
I will guarantee (as best I can from this far downunder) that the original 25 year old coils/leads/caps will not give me the spark that the stick coils do.
Cheers, SB
and don't forget to...........

Hey Seb
I have recently purchased a set of 2006 CBR1000 stick coils for my 88 just a quick check it would seem that they are pretty long and seem to stick up a long way up over the cam cover. Should I have maybe gone for a model that has a shorter cap? Have just checked they are 140mm overall length.I have done the conversion on my V Max and the results are impressive ,better starting ,idle, performaqnce and economy,if you could ever mention economy and V Max in the same sentence.

Back
They are 127mm TOTAL length.
So, yes yours would stand proud of the rocker cover by nearly 15mm. On my Kawasaki they stand out of the rocker cover by about 20mm and I just used a large O ring in the spark plug tube to hold them centred.
Hope that helps JK
Cheers, SB
PS Have you voted in the September ROTM yet?? I'm trailing the Whippersnipper by 3 votes. Viva lá CBR1000F
On page #5 is how I centered mine. Later in the thread Sprock posted a Ford PVC part that works better. I may try it at a later time.
Thanks SB nTBT
I'll be going back up to Hawkes Bay in another couple of weeks so will do a thorough checkout and maybe a trial fit and connect and see how things run. Will report back when I get back home.

I jumped on the bandwagon and picked up a set with harness off ebay that came off a 2001 929. I hope I did right!!
He had them listed for $30.00 plus shipping and on a lark I made an offer of $10.00 and he took it!
