G’day, I’m Matt another Aussie here, just took ownership of my first Hurricane about a month ago and discovered it had some issues, hoping to find some Sydney people here to offer some recommendations for mechanics or maybe guidance in working through some of these issues.
Just joined because I recently acquired a cheap '92 1000F that's been off the road for quite a few years and is rather lacking in history and documentation. Quite a few bits were off the bike when I got it, and now even more of them are off. First good sign is that the engine isn't seized, haven't turned it over fully yet because I don't have a plug puller that fits so will get onto that this weekend. She's a pretty crusty old girl but nothing causing any kind of serious concern just yet, wait and see I suppose.
Obvious issues I've noticed so far:
* Rear brake pedal doesn't move at all - do the 92 bikes have the linked brakes?
* Radiator was off the bike and doesn't look great
* Broken faring mount for the rear cowl
* Key won't go into the cap on the fuel tank. Looks like it should, but no go, guess I'll just replace the cap
* A lot of white oxide crap around the water pump, looks like it probably leaked at some point
Plan of action:
* Pull the plugs
* Drop a little engine oil in each cylinder
* Turn it over by hand for sanity
* Clean the carbies
* Refit the cooling system
* Oil and filter
* Jury rig a bottle of gas
* See if she'll fire up (battery will be toast so will jump from another vehicle)
Figured until I know whether or not I know the engine runs (apparently it was working when put away, but who knows given the rad was off) there's no need to spend time worrying about brakes, clutch, transmission, suspension, drivetrain, electrics etc. Hopefully she does run and that's all to come.
A new, highly professional website offering OEM stickers, with a great selection for older models as well. It's a good idea to remember the site's address as it could be useful. https://oem-motordecals.com/en/honda
Hi folks - from a new member but not an owner. I'm a retired mechanic who repairs bikes from time to time for acquaintances who can't, for one reason or another, get their bikes serviced and/or repaired at a regular bike shop. I do it as a hobby. I'm located in Geraldton, Western Australia - 425km north of Perth, on the coast of the Indian Ocean.
Anyhow, I've been asked to fix a Hurricane built in 12/87 which hasn't been run for about 4 years and has been badly neglected over that time. This is how it was delivered to me - after I'd hosed the thick layer of dust off.
The owner states that it was running when he got but left it stored until he found the money and someone to get it road worthy again - me. Good for him. It obviously needs a lot of work. The first thing I tried to do was to attempt to get it to fire momentarily by spraying some starting fluid into the airbox, after fitting a new battery. Nothing! I then removed 2 plug leads from the head (one for each coil), inserted a spare plug into each, grounded them and cranked it over. No spark.
I then found this great forum with help from Dr Google and this fabulous thread in particular. I'll do the tests that dannoxyz detailed therein and report my findings over there.
