I don't know for sure how much HP it actually made, but the sound was there, and it felt peppy. Ive never rode one in stock trim, so I don't have anything to compare it to. That one was a mid 90's 500.

The headlight cowl was weird. But, my wife liked it, so we kept it on. There are some pretty cool fightered GS500s out there.

yeah I'm not really sure either man, i'll get mine on the dyno at some point just out of curiosity. bit like the 105bhp f3, you're lucky to see mid 90s at the wheel on most of them. the gs is a funny one, there are next to no changes in its time served 89 & 07 use the same frame, engine and major components. minus carbs. pre 01 used a 2 circuit 33mm carb (except from the french 34s) & post 00' used a 3circuit 34mm.

stock trim they leave lots to be desired shall we say xP, reckon mine is worth every penny i spent and every hour of swearing. i could sit and chat about them all day haha so I'm going to stop right now.

Right... the CBR lolz going to pop up tomorrow, drill holes for the master cylinder and play about with the spacing to make the rearsets clear everything. hopefully going to speak to welder option number 2 over the xmas break and see if he can spend some time on my subframe =] not holding my breath but its the price you pay when dealing in favours right. wish i had a space of my own to make investing in a welder and teaching myself worthwhile.

seen a couple of dynoprints in the high 40s for a tuned gs, i reckon you could see 50bhp on an exceptionally healthy one or a high reading dyno lolz must've been near the 50 mark though, I'm shocked.

//

finally had the time to play around with them.

spaced them out around 8mm give or take using longer bolts a nut and a couple of washers, sorts all clearance issues out but the bolt allows for slightly more flex (albeit not bad) than I'm comfortable with so i'll need to make a plate up to sit across both holes and space it out. by all means more tan rideable but i wouldn't want to jump abut on them at full tilt.

brake lever is going to sit ever so slightly high on full adjustment, not going to be an issue as its very slight but when i drill the holes to mount the master properly i may have to stretch it forward a notch to bring the pedal down. was too late to be making that kind of noise with a drill tonight lolz

gave the brembo logo a very quick brush over with a finishing pad, will need to go a bit harsher to bring a flat finish out of the porous cast finish.

gear lever side is very tight with the rod between the side stand bolts and the lever. took a bit of fettling to get that right.

not bad for the money at all though just a shame that you need to make them work.

not too keen on how nothing holds this pin in the collet though... thinking i might drill a hole and tap it for a bolt on the end, might be ok for the standard master but its not ideal on the brembo.

//

spent the best part of an hour just looking the bike over and really the only thing thats holding me back is waiting on getting the subframe welded up, don't really want to make trays up for the electrics and battery until i know exactly how its going to pan out.

//

the top yolk is stepped so fitting clamps for a set of renthals is awkward as so i'll with get something machined up dependant on cost or just buy one.

i also pinched the speedo to use on the calliper so may or may not get an identical item or i might try something else as it was pretty awkward to read.

hopefully going on holiday in february so any extra cost on the cbr will be getting put on hold till afterwards not that i think theres a great deal left to be spent to get it to a state of road use.

been thinking about the speedo situation and wether or not replacing the db01r+ with another is the way forward. yes its quite small and yes i quit like the shape but its very difficult to read, especially the rpm. ace well seem to have a couple of viable options but the price tag is just a tad excessive. i won't be spending £200 on a speedo thats for sure. most practical I've found is the koso rxn2 as it has a proper dial tacho but overall the size of it would be excessive on a naked bike i reckon, that and yet again its not cheap. db02r is like a slightly larger 01r+ and has shift light attachments alongside the idiot lights, seems to be my best option at the moment but I'm keeping an eye out. its quite difficult to match features, legibility and size into something thats going to be appropriate and thats without taking cost into consideration, bit of a tricky one. open to suggestions/experiences, anyone who's following this

just measuring up the space available for a speedo to help work what i fancy doing.

the crease in the bracket indicates where the lip of the headlight lines up to.

about 65mm to the headlight.

about 60-65mm diagonally. could perhaps fit a round dial speedo in there. potentially a taco one side and speedo on the other as there should be plenty of room once the renthal fatties are on there.

//

kind of thinking about paint stripping the faces that show on the frame back to raw, lacquering them and painting the hidden areas black just to keep them better protected. its not really something I've seen done which really appeals to me.

really need to find someone to weld my subframe up, just everyone seems to be busy this time of year. maaaaan i wish i could weld.

Here`s an example of what bare metal can look like when done right. Would do that to my next project as well if it would suit it but alas it doesn`t. Probly will be doing it to some project somewhere in the future though...

oh i spy an f2! looks sweet man, might be the lighting but it looks quite patchy if that was the finish. thats what i had originally planned on doing, just stripping the tank, might still strip the spare one when i get the pinholes repaired. I've run raw bmx frames for years, really like the look. think I've seen 1 or 2 chops running a raw frame but never a sports bike, saying that... gone are the days of the steel framed sports bike.

thats the gs ready to get insured tomorrow! =D me officially back on the road after parking up the gsxr for winter. going to be so much fun, can't wait.

done a spot more hunting for speedos and I've found something that might actually be bordering on perfect for me. acewell's ace-d52 series. 52mm diameter round multifunction gauge.

found a wee video of one working as well -

should be able to tuck it to the left of the ignition switch, nice and out of the way. decently priced but certainly don't have the money to play with for a month or so. quite happy with the find =D

Acewells are good speedos. I think they also have the ability to hook up to the factory speed sensors, which is nice.

Have fun on that GS

I've heard good things conrice, seem to be one of the more reputable companies as well. hope i'll be able be able to hook it up to the factory sensor, would save a bit of hassle and untidiness of hall effect sensor on to the disk. could be a pain to program not knowing the specs as to how many points it picks up of and the circumference that its spinning on. on the plus side I've got a speed radar sign, that just tells you your speed outside my front door i can use to get it accurate enough.

bit annoyed with the insurance for the gs, my multi bike policy (for all the bikes) ends feb 1st and they want more than 2 thirds of what it would cost for a year to insure the gs for one month. bit of a joke really so I'm off the road till next month more or less just out of principle. i can afford to pay it but it would really put me out. damn priorities and adult stuff the gf isn't too fussed about chauffeuring me around too much for the time being either

been thinking about what I've got left to do on the cbr.

to get it on the road in good working order.

1. subframe needs fabricated when i can find someone to do it.
2. battery/electrics tray once the tail is on.
3. make a tail tidy/ numberplate holder.
4. modify the later 600rr brake light to squeeze into my tail.
5. wire in the headlight.
6. fix wiring loom onto the frame etc once everything is in place.
7. make new preload spacer to replace the damaged one.
8. reset forks to factory settings.
9. wire new speedo once i get round to buying it.
10. replace the remaining 3 brake seal sets that were the wrong size and figure out why the brakes are sticking when they shouldn't be.
11. replace back tyre, got a 160 pilot road 4 sitting.

(just remembered, sort out the bolts for the rearsets so theres no flex and tap a bolt into the arm that holds the rear master to the lever to make sure it can't slide off.)

think thats basically it, its quite a bit when you think about it. so atleast theres a couple of things i can still do before the tail is on but finding time and dealing with minus temps is tedious.

hopefully get the tyre done next week, have a play with the brakes, make sure the disks are straight although they look fine, wire in the headlight, pull out the good preload spacer so i can use it as reference for making a new one.

some other stuff on the long term plans...

12. delkevic carbon mini exhaust.
13. make bracket for steering damper.
14. rejet, got the jets sitting.
15. install the emc shock and get a base tune.
16. new top yolk so i can fit 7/8 bars, either get one machined or go aftermarket.
17. fat bars
18. braided lines.
19. f4i coil on plug setup, got them sitting.
20. start playing with the early blade 38mm carbs i have sitting.
21. sort out paintwork.

and thats only project bike 1 of 3... haha well all the later stuff on the list isn't major, like i doesn't need done for the bike to be usable.

about to put a 60mm shorter braced 750ws swingarm on the 11 shortly, paint stripping and polishing starts tomorrow for that so i just need to get some spacers machined, replace the bearings and bolt the bugger on. once again the cbr is left on the back burner for now but theres no harm in keeping it in mind and figuring stuff out, right. i'll fire the welder a message tomorrow and see what his schedule is like at the moment, that and see why the starter isn't spinning on the lil' gs. fun fun busy busy
