made another spot of progress the other weekend.

just looking at the std seat hook placement.

showing the gap it leaves between seat and tank.

[/url]

showing roughly where the seat bracket will have to be placed. note, the welds need to be ground back slightly xD theyre not the prettiest but they're certainly functional.

under the rear cowl.

lower spars cut, bent up, shaped and welded. they basically flow into the shape of the upper spars. should be a nice clean line once the welds are ground back a bit. looks very *cough* ''german streetfighter'' without the tail on haha each... to their own... right P=

and with the tail placed on =D the supports still need to be made up but the flat bar is sitting ready and ive modified the front of the rider seat so that it sits much nicer to the tank.

still to modify the brake light so that it fits in the tail and still to make electric trays up but i have some ideas.

one of the fresh fork seals has started leaking so the forks will need rebuilt again. thats the first time ive ever had a problem with aftermarket seals.

so yeah... thats where its at for the time being.

sadly its too close to the end of the season for it to be worthwhile putting on the road and i have procured a pile of spares including a 14thou mile spare engine =D

its all progress though, ive said it before but never underestimate a 'winter project' haha

Hey, there you go! It's been a while, glad to see you putting in work! Gap between the seat looks big on the close up, but it doesn't look out of place in the last pic at all! I like!

yeah, pics were just to show how everything lines up prior to hacking the seat. think i amended the gap the following weekend but forgot to grab photos. it looks even tighter with that gap sorted =D

havent had the chance to get near it since sorting the gap lol projects projects projects. gs has got a bit mad and the gsxr has been nothing but bad luck haha

i think all its needing for the tail swap now is the support brackets made up, the brake light trimmed to take the tail and the area to the rear of the seat trimmed possibly to get the tail nice and forward. if i remember correctly the latter makes the plastic sit protruding past the sides of the seat which looks odd when you know its there. see what happens, probably going to be another couple of weeks before i can touch it. heres hoping the tail is swapped before xmas so close but so far, seems to be a never ending reoccurring theme but i'll get there once the cbr becomes priority again.

i'll have to catch up on your thread when ive got a sec

that moment when you realise your winter projects been off the road for 2 years... thats me on the push to get it on the road for spring coming in. hopefully get a couple of hours at the tail just to finish that off and get the bike moved somewhere closer asap where i can get more frequent access again

just leaving this here Project 69 rolls ;-)) - BARF - Bay Area Riders Forum

this guy went to the bother of actually mounting it tidily, beware its pornographic. its something on the back burner for when the bikes parked up for 'winter' again and theres some spare cash flow haha

still haven't had time to progress with mine unfortunately.

HOLY THREAD RESURRECTION!

the build hasn't been abandoned or sold just life and it's inconveniences got in the way.

got the cbr trailered up from my friends where its been dry stored but welding the tail was weather dependant to to his friends spot, so now theres a good always dry and never windy workspace for welding.

after 4 or 5 hours work of making the seat support too high so that the whole tail sat above the subframe leaving it exposed we started from scratch and got the seat support in. put it down to trial and error.

so... back on track! my only gripe is that without damn near making the subframe from scratch (out of the question at this point) i haven't been able to get the seat height quite right.

the later f3 standard seat height is 30.9'' from the lowest point on the seat to the ground but i'm down to 30'' at the moment which isn't ideal for me being 5ft11'' and long legged. it's tolerable but feels a bit bunched up on the rearsets.

for comparison sake the std gs500 seat height is 30''
a bandit 600 is 30.5''
the old 900rr is 31.9''
an 08 1000rr blade is 32.3''
bmw s1000rr is 32''
a cbr500 is 30.5''
the 07 600rr is 32.3''
cbr 600 f3 30.9''

so 30'' isn't drag bike low or unusable or anything but it's not right for me, most modernish sport bikes seem to be around the 32'' area and 90's stuff seems to be around 31'' mostly.

once it's all on i'm going to adjust the seat the best i can without it looking wrong and then i'll probably have to make something up to jack up the rear end, jack up kits for the f3 are crazy expensive, theres no way i'm shelling out for one.

i was hoping the emc shock i've got was a little taller than the standard f3 one but both are 295mm eye to eye.

//

the tail is only loosely fitted here hence it doesn't look straight.

hopefully i'll be able to squeeze my new battery into a tray under the rider seat to fill that gap up.

i really could look at this thing all day and i'm just so happy to see the work getting put in again, as i'll be 3 years into this project as of december i think, my new tyres are probably almost out of date haha it's cool though they will getting thrashed in spring time

so yeah, things are happening again! think i might go back through the whole thread and tidy some stuff up a bit.

just a quick bare minimum roadworthy checklist.

1. finish tail, tail tidy, electrics tray etc

2. wire in the headlight.

3. route and maybe adjust wiring loom if needed

4. replace damaged preload adjuster and spacer

5. decide on speedo situation, short term cheap gps bicycle one?

6. pull the brakes for a rebuild and clean again to stop sticking, fit braided lines at same time.

7. fit new rear disk.

8. bolt up rear master cylinder and hydraulic brake light switch

9. mount R/R

10. drop and replace fluids and oil filter.

this builds been a series of unfortunate events hindering progress. blaaaaa. and getting distracted in other projects may have recently picked up another cbr 600 f3 for a bare frame restoration, about 25 hours into it in the last two weeks

long story short i've had to relocate the bike, good news is that i'll be getting a shot of a wee gasless mig welder just to spot the last of it together so it can be welded up properly by my guy which means i wont actually be stuck reliant on anyone to actually fabricate it.

just messing about with exhausts fitted loosely, not too sure if i'll go undertail and if i do the rear hugger will need to come off and theres heat concerns over where i'd like to put the battery. also i'd want it side exit the microns link just seems too long, like the angle would work if the can didn't start so far back. i've got a few more cans and another link lying about so theres a few options.

got the tail sitting pretty spot on, looks like i've sorted the height issue by raising the front and mellowing out the angle a little, should fall about 31'' give or take which i'm happy with.

hopefully i'll get some fabricating done this week but i'll need to go grab the materials. got some good ideas though.

the fighter project that never seems to make progress haha best laid plans

130 hours of spare time into the 2nd f3 restoration in two months over the xmas period, all the main stuff is done, just bodywork prep and paint left to do really. see i do get stuff done haha

had the fighter out and dropped the old fluids from it, fresh oil, flushed the coolant and a k&n oil filter. fired it up on the slashcut undertail, oh damn she loud, i'll probably throw a baffle in it just to take the edge off.

got a bit of time to play with the fighter this week, so some tail progress WILL be made.

the swingarm on the restoration project had rust pinholes when i stripped it off, so i've robbed the good one off the fighter and i'll be replacing it with an alloy f4 swinger, should be about a kilo lighter and it means i can get a jack up kit at a tenth of the cost of an f3 one too. going to look meaty. i'll probably get an f4i rear wheel to make it work and the other little things just to make it an easier swap. downside is i'll have to run 180 on the new wheel and i've got a zero mile road pilot 4 already on the bike.

so ive got the f4 swingarm dirt cheap with shock linkage, need to source the lighter f4i rear wheel, rear sprocket carrier, rear brake carrier, rear brake if the f3 doesn't have the same bolt spacing, rear axle and wheel spacers. most of which should be cheap enough when the time comes. i wont be able to use the f3 rear sprocket due to the different PCD on the carrier but i'll be able to use the wavy rear brake disk. i'll need to shave down the swingarm to fit in the frame, hopefully dont nee to shave the swingarm mounts on the frame. i'll get spacers made up to reduce the f4 bearing size down to the f3 swingarm axle. my only concern is getting the wheel in the right place straight, now i should be able to fit the shock linkage to use as a fixed centre point for the frame and swingarms to get the measurements right and then it's a case of correcting the chain run if need be.

the plan is to have her on the road for spring still and have the restoration bike finished for the end of February.

my bike the 1998, last of the steelies turned 20 this year! how was 1998 20 years ago!?
