That's the safe rule for lame lawyers. If you know people, you can gamble.
The parable that is told about asking one too many questions is about a witness on the stand that claimed to have seen the defendant bite the victims ear off. The lawyer asks a bunch of little questions about what was in the way and how far it was and which way things were configured and got the guy to admit that he didn't actually see the man bite the ear off. So, wanting to drive it home, he says "So how can you come here today and testify that my client bit the victim's ear off?" Witness: "I saw him spit it out."
