My first bike was an 04 600RR also and i was seventeen and the first time i rode it i raced it at layrue race way and ran 12s yea not great but for my first time on a street bike not bad...just get the basics down take it easy and you will be fine.....

 

Know this thread is pretty old but here goes..... I too started with my very first sport bike at age 30. Never even rode a dirt bike before (Just heavy into mountain biking). Went through all the classes (Permit and MSF course). Picked up virtually the same bike the original poster bought: (03 600rr Two bros exhaust, comp werks fend elim, led turns, sporttec windshield, 10k mi for 5000gs) Started really riding in May 07 and as of Nov put on another 6400mi. All I have to say is......
HOLY CRAP!!!
Love the bike found it really easy to learn on, comfy, forgiving,and what you put into it you get right back. Treated it with lots of respect and its done the same for me. And, no, I haven't dropped it (yet). I can be aggressive at times; but I'm not *****-out all the time.

Like a lot of you have said... "RESPECT THE BIKE"

P.S. You guys know where a Mainer can get snow tires for a 600rr. [sm=joke.gif]

I love my RR, and that other bike sitting over there --> too. Have fun!!!

 

If this is your first motrocycle ever..in your life...then I would suggest something a bit more tame.

Maybe a smaller, GS500, or ZX5000 or 250 sized bike.

An RR, even a 600 is very very fast.

I recently bought my first RR, (2004 600 RR 3k miles)..and it is twice as potent as my F2 is.

I have also been riding for more than 25 years, Dirt and street.

 

the whole "go slow, take it easy, and get comfortable" while learnin' to ride is a horrible mentality to possess if you're on a motorcycle... if you learn to ride in such a tentative manner you will evolve into a passive rider. and passive riding puts you in uhoh and buttpuckerin situations left and right. and of course bein' a new rider... these situations are goin' to test your skills.. premature skills that is.

600rr is not the bike to learn to ride a motorcycle on... this is race bike w/ mirrors and lights.. and pretty much goes for any modern 600.. even the f4i...

YOU ARE GOING TO MAKE MISTAKES... A LOT OF THEM IN THE FIRST YEAR OF RIDING. and let them mistakes be on somethin' forgiving... a 600RR is NOT A FORGIVING BIKE.. a forgiving bike is a ninja250.. or a gs500...

then again if u wanna kill yourself.... go ahead.. because i'm pretty much tired of all these squidly like genes in my kids' future gene pool.. you're better off eradictin' yourself via dumb decisions.

+1 on the Respect thing.

As a beginning rider, I made alot of errors and laid down the bike a few times. Just remember, it's all about practice,practice,practice. The more you ride, the better you'll get, it's as simple as that.

Most importantly though, don't ride like a squid. I've got a few idiot friends that ride in shorts and t-shirts with tennis shoes. Get yourself some proper gear if you don't have it.
