I forgot to oil the chain when I tightened it, so doing that got rid of the noise straight away. Hopefully I did not damage the chain by running it so long without oiling--it was quite stiff. After oiling it was a VERY SMOOTH ride.
Tire is getting put on as I type and I will pick it up after work. If that makes as much of a difference as oiling the chain it will be like riding on the clouds.
Next up (along with the clutch) is tightening the throttle as I have been told that it is pretty loose.

Fixed but not fixed
F,S & B!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
had a misfire on #2 - checked all electrics - ok
stripped down and checked all valve clearances - pain in the A
Put it all back together - misfire but not as bad
Let it run and can now hear a small puff noise around cyl head - blown head gasket or just leaking
Anyway stripping it down again to tighten the head bolts before going whole hog on a head gasket replacement.
New front wheel has arrived so down the tyre shop for new rubber
Bi-xenon HID kit due next week

That's an ominous puff you got there. Your mileage is around 40 thou from memory. Seems kinda prem for the gasket to be giving out, Then again you don't know exact history. Bugger.
Well if you're going down the new gasket route here's your best and cheapest place for top end gasket kits.

I may have to come down and split some cans while you're wrenching.
On the other hand, You could just have the rubber fitted and split your ears with a grin.
Tough choice.
Beer at mine then?

a tale of 2 cbrs
hear yea hear yea
i am about to tell you the tale of the 2 cbrs
cbr1000 fl pre june 1 2011
a nice enough bike , but sometimes difficult to start , later on gradually suffering more and more from cutting out and eventual fuel starvation
checked : carbs
checked fuel tap and renewed the filter and rubber seals
checked the fuel lines
checked the air entry line
still getting worse and worse
beginning to think of selling the ole bugger
took it to a dealer and they find the problems in about 10 minutes
cbr 1000fl post june 1 2011
they removed the scottoiler system ( it was lying fitted but unused for years )
hallelujah! praise the lord!
bike is transformed completely
why :
the scottoiler is vacuum operated from the vacuum line going to the carb valve
apparently the scottoiler's membrane was perforated and the perforation got bigger and bigger as time went on, letting in progressively more and more air and killing the vacuum till there was none left = > hence the fuel tap " failure "
moral of the story=> never fit a scottoiler , they are just a problem in waiting
greeting from belgium
