I am about to dive into this tear down as well, my 4th gear is done.

Is it possible to split the cases without pulling the head, cams ect?

Was thinking about selling the bike as it is not worth much and not sure I have the 10 hours to do the tear down.

Thanks

Yes--make sure you pull the clutch as there's a part bolted to both the top and bottom cases and the cam chain guide on the tensioner side is connected to the lower case. You I believe have to remove the cam chain tensioner to do this.

Also: either pull the valve cover and zip tie the cam chain to the cam sprockets or be very cautious of moving the crank while the tensioner is disconnected--I managed to jump a tooth on the cam sprockets and the bike ran very poorly for a short while.

I'm not a mechanic and had never been this far into a motor but it took me 40+ hours and a little under $1k in parts. It was worth it to me for the learning experience and now I have the bike back and it's running/shifting great but it no way made sense financially if you consider my time.
