The whole system's functionality is in question. It supposedly allows better driveablity at low speed, but those of us who've removed the lot have found no operational differences - aside from MARKEDLY better performance from 5k to 6k under light loads.

Do yourself a favor - disconnect the hoses at the solenoid per Honda Racing and reconnect them after removing the solenoid. You will find your bike running better. There is a nice diagram from HRC showing how to do it on the web.

The consensus is that the solenoids fail closed, making the bike try to draw air through the tiny pipes instead of the big ram air intake. Most folks here believe this was Honda's engineered solution to meet some goofy pollution control standard.
