Default Main Fuse

Hi there guys.

In the process of fettling the bike for the coming season and stumbled across the main fuse holder. It doesn't look too healthy to me, I can't tell if it's been glued together by a former owner, or if the thing has just melted and fused itself together. I can't prise it apart without destroying the thing, but the wires going into it look pretty corroded.

Before I completely destroy this thing I just wanted to ask what the best course of action would be. Can I re-connect everything with off the shelf auto-electrical parts, or would it be better to buy an old wiring loom off E-bay and cannibalise that? Secondly do you guys think I have to buy a MK2 wiring loom, or will they all be pretty much the same?

Sorry about the focus on the images, one day I'll figure out how to use the camera.

Mine doesn't look too bad hawk..............

I'd be tempted to clean it up - including the wires or find a similar one (from a Honda) from a breakers and slot that in.

My humble opinion

Cheers, SB

Mine was totally wrecked - melted, corroded, fused together, you name it - when I checked it a couple of years ago. I replaced the metal parts with bullet connectors, cut out some bits of rubber to put between them for insulation (they're pretty close together), and fashioned a box out of plastic to surround it all.
I also carry a diagram of which wire joins to which in my toolkit - just in case!
I recently had to do the same thing with the five wires from the alternator...

Hey Hawk.
Bad luck on that little mess. Looks like you've spotted a potential roadside show stopper there.
There's been a glut of the things on ebay recently. I'd just change the thing for a second hand one. Hardly worth messing about too much for the cost of a decent second hand replacement.

Try this:

HONDA CBR1000 STARTER SOLENOID RELAY CBR CBR1000F SC24 1996 | eBay

Here's a new pattern one:

Pattern Starter Relay to fit Honda CBR 1000 F 87-92 | eBay

If these are not to your liking there are a lot being sold out of the states but the postage cost kills the deal.
Cleaning up the terminals on the harness plug is always a bit of a pain. If you really need to put a new plug on then you'll have to unwrap the harness for some distance either side of it to get enough slack in the cables to accommodate the 20ish mm you'll need (if you're lucky).
Good luck mate. It'd be good to catch up with you soon and get a ride in.

Hello Howard. Nice to see you in the saloon. Hope all's well with you.

FWIW it looks the same as the one on my 600. Maybe you can find it cheaper under another model.

the fuse /relay connector is fairly generic across a multitude of jap bikes, go to any wrecker & you will find hundred's of the bugga's

Thanks for the opinions and links guys, think I'll go with a used one and take it from there, prefer to just plug and play. Hopefully this will improve my cold starting as well.

Henry would be good to catch up again, definitely later in the year when the weather has improved a bit. Thanks for the link

Ahem..... the weather is rather good right now Steve but then in your high altitude world you could be forgiven for thinking it's sunny 24 hours a day.
Shame about the damp, slippery, clag sodden surfaces of most of the twisties after all the flooding. It's a good time to improve ones riding skills. I was lucky enough to have 5 hours spare yesterday for a 200 mile ride on back roads right through the middle of Surrey, Sussex and Kent. Boy, did I grin a lot. One of those rides that etches on the memory.
I may have a spare solenoid. I'll check and let you know.

Bike's in bits right now Henry, that's why the sun is shining, sods law proving infallible again!

Already pulled the trigger on the one you linked too (solenoid), thanks for the offer though, want to get her up and running asap, can't waste too many of these nice days.

So the replacement solenoid and loom arrived today and it's different from the one fitted to the bike, obviously one of the small differences between the MK2 and the MK3 ('cos it's off a '96 bike).

Question, do you guys think the solenoid from the '96 bike will work OK on my '91?

Also in getting the thing apart on the bike I managed to destroy the red plug for the 30A fuse, this thing really was knackered, I'm surprised the bike would even run! I'm hoping that she'll run/start a lot better once I get this sorted out.

I've ordered one of these

Starter Relay Solenoid Plug Fit Honda CBR 600 900 929 954 1000 1100XX 1000F VTR | eBay

Just hope it doesn't take forever to arrive.
