when passing a scooter
The majority of scooter riders around here would have absolutely no idea why you're waving at them. Most are college students who use them for a cheap and easily parked transport from Point A to Point B. Hell it might freak them out, thinking something was wrong.
They're not like motorcycle riders, lacking a sense of community. So they don't know any bike etiquette.

First, I love scooters. Doesn't anyone remember "Roman Holiday'? Gregory Peck, Audrey Hepburn? I never see them out on the roads we ride (winding country two-lane blacktop), until....
The other day some slobby looking guy with a helmet that looked like a mushroom on a total POS scooter road past my son and I and gave us the "low sign" which is so popular around here. I almost fell off my bike laughing. I waved back, but it was soooooooooooooo funny. My kid mentioned it to me at the next stop. We both got a kick out of it.

I only wave at other sportbikes and it seems the feeling seems mutual for the Harley and cruser riders. Harley's and cruisers make too much noise and **** me off so I don't wave at them.
The scooter people are usually just riding to save money, not for the love of riding (I tried riding a scooter once and it can't be for fun).

I agree Incognito, the dilemma is childish but why even wave to a fellow rider if you will only be rejected and waste youre time...of course I will always wave to sportbikes! but as for anything else I generally just dont want to feel stupid for giving support and being ignored...I mean maybe they are too consumed in riding they just dont notice me but i seem to notice everyone on anything with 2 wheels. IMO anyone on 2 wheels is a fellow rider i mean yeah scooters are a little iffy but hey they are risking their backs not being in a cage as well...
Bought my wife a metrapolitan last week to ride the whole 4 blocks to work. I was riding it home after the purchase and my son tells my wife "I bet Orie or Devin drives by!" (Orie and Devin are buddies I race with). I stopped at an intersection when Orie and his wife came around the corner. about the time he was telling her to "look at the *** on the scooter (I'm about 200 lbs, looked kind of rediculous)" I stood up and waved at him. you should have seen the stupified look on his face staring back. His wife goes "I want one!" My wife and son in the car behind me was hysterical. Then a couple of blocks from home I was taunting a guy driving a vette, couldn't get him to race me though, needless to say it was quite the ride home. Topped her out at 38mph.
I got the ex a Yamaha Vino many years back (the secret strategy was to get something my kid could learn to ride on). I loved puttering around on that things. You really DO feel "free" because the risk is all but gone and they handle so effortlessly. It's goofy fun. She road it around the first day to show off and claimed she never wanted to get off, then never got on it again. Must have thought it hurt her "image" as an uppity beotch.
