Default newb.... alloy?

Hey, I'm new here and would really appreciate some help.

I'm a member of a university FSAE race team. Basically we build a formula style racecar, powered by a sportbike engine, and compete in an annual competition.

We are currently using an F4i engine. However, one of our engine blocks was cracked during a recent cold spell, since we have to run water instead of antifreeze. The only damage is on the exterior, just a water jacket. Since it is a non critical location, we are considering welding it.

The problem... we are not sure as to the composition of the aluminum alloy. Or maybe there is a better way of dealing with this? If someone could please help it would greatly appreciated.

i've used cold weld (JB Weld) on aluminum alloys with great success, but you may have addt'l concerns if it's a high-stress application. seems like we've had a couple other members who were involved in the FSAE on the site, and FOR SURE there are guys here who have rebuilt every aspect of the F4i engine.
