I have a chain tool and a filter cup, prefer the cup on the F4i but the chain tool is better on some bikes where clearance is an issue (i.e. zx10r).
Stabbing a screwdriver through it is asking for trouble... we've all done it, but then we've all stuck a finger up our butt too, doesn't make it a good idea.

If the filter is particularly seized through corrosion or a ham fisted previous owner it can tear the filter to bits leaving you with a stub attached to the cooler and no way to grip it.
