It could very well be a bad reed valve or your "pair reed valve" going bad, although it's not very common. Have you done the clean air mod?

Reed valves are one way valves that allow passing exhaust gasses to pull suction of fresh air from the air box into the exhaust headers(for cleaner emissions). there are 2 of them on the f4i, each one has 2 ports connecting to an exhaust exit. one per cylinder.

The pair reed valve is a plastic valve/switch that connects the two reed valves together. the clean air mod removes the PRV and connect the reed valves to the PCV vent on the valve cover (rubber hose below).

Thanks for the info! I have not done the clean air mod (only owned the bike for about a week), but I'll definitely put it on my to-do list.
