Not once did i say that higher octane is BETTER. I just said i used 87 on the bike once (after reading the manual, my first tank of gas was 87) the bike pinged like a bastard.
Don't forget that most states had different things in gas. We have more alcohol then your gas because we have colder weather then most southern/eastern states.
87 might be good for someone in california or florida, while up here in the NE our 87 (even from shell/exon/mobil is just nasty stuff, ive seen it up close and what it does to fuel pumps)

speaking of stuff in gasoline...i know of some forced induction engines have gone down to mexico and didn't ping on the pump stuff there! we were very surpised andcouldn't figure out why (their stuff is crap...). but i think the consensus now is due to the amount of water in the gas...sort of like water injection...only you're paying more for the water.
point is...you take what you can get...and maybe at times...we don't get what we think we're getting.

we're all going to have to disagree with you there slip...no car can run bull$hit and work...unless it was designed to run off bull$hit...which does burn pretty good...once surf tripping in mexico, we had no fire wood to cook so we gathered cow patties and burned them. worked VERY well...with green flames too. only thing was these chicks were also camping nearby...and they asked what we were doing as we were collecting these fuel frisbees...we said "oh...just getting some wood for the fire"...they laughed and took off, cause we all know there was no wood in sight, no tree in sight, only cow dung!

Just use 87... it's what the manual calls for. If it pings, bump it up to 89. "premium" (<--- marketing gimmick... there's absolutely nothing premium about it) is nothing more than 'watered down' (figuratively speaking) 87 octane. Using premium in an engine that's designed to run on 86/87 octane will only hurt the performance, being that you're using a fuel that has a higher resistance to ignite. If it required premium fuel, it would say so in the manual
If not, you're only throwing extra $$ away to lower your performance... doesn't make sense
I always use 87 on mine and it works perfectly fine
And +1 to the CCT... more than likely that's what's causing your noise. An APE manual CCT works wonders!

You're all noobs, I use everclear that stuff is like.... 190 octane! Usually the day after I fill up with a couple bottles of it my bike runs like crap and it feels sick and like puke stuff comes out of the exhaust.
I put in 87 it's what the manual says and I don't know what engine ping sounds like so I just keep putting it in.
