I took both my fairings off. It's a little extra work but it makes getting in there easier. You're also probably going to need an oil filter wrench. I ordered one from ams oil when I ordered my oil. I think it was ten bucks.

Oil filter wrench, definitely. Or hammer a screwdriver into it if your wrench breaks li-ke mine did last time.

Get an oil filter wrench...the kind that goes on a socket wrench and a 6" extension...bam..problem solved...no need to take fairings off...you can cover up the headers with some foil and shape it into a little funnel so the oil goes right into the pan

or channel lock pliers.....easy and done....or next time get K&N filters, they have a nut welded on to the end of the filter....1 socket, job done.

Take off your farings and get an oil filter wrench, a strap wrench should do. Sometimes you can turn it by hand. Buy a K&N next time so you can put a socket on it.

You should be able to get it off by hand. Oil filters should only be turned 2/3 - 1 turn after the gasket on the filter starts touching the metal.
