I dont think the coils are in the wrong position because i never touched them, but I guess its possible that maybe one coincidentally went bad while i was doing this. Worth the effort to check I suppose.

Explaining the way a car/bike sounds can be difficult and everyone gets different ideas of the "sound" through words used so maybe I am giving you the wrong advice based off of your harley sound explanation.

If you have a bad spark plug wire or coil, your bike will sound odd, almost deeper and throaty. This is easy to check though, just pull your plugs and test for spark visually.

If you have switched your wires around, or screwed up your timing, you will hear what I perceive to be the harley sound. You will hear something very similar to back firing because your bike is igniting the air/fuel charge with the valves open.

Well pretty much what I mean by the Harley sound is that one of the cylinders doesn't have the right compression due to timing or what have you. I still havent had a chance to check the coils so ill update soon.

Great write up. I just got a 94 cbr with this same problem and was about to make a thread about it. Thanks for saving me the time.

Default noob question..

Noob question here, but referring to the guide a second, when you say start the engine and check for the rattle then adjust; if it has to be adjusted do you need to turn the engine off to perform this adjustment? or can you adjust the manual CCT with the engine running?.

I was meddling with the original OEM cct and when my engine is running, if you take off the top bolt, it looks like the screw inside is rotating, is it doing that because it is lose? or is this normal?

I am not sure about what screw you are talking about. I forget what the OEM tensioner looks like, but I would really refrain from running the engine while doing anything that might resemble loosning the tension, or allowing it to loosen on its own. The cam chain could jump teeth and ruin your engine.

idk about the OEM one, but while doing the Manual CCT I started mine then loosened it till I heard the rattle. After I heard the rattle I screwed it in till it went away and then tightened it, did it like that 2 years ago and it's still running strong.

Craig 84, when you say you loosend it until it rattled, was your engine running whilst you was doing this?

You can do that with the manual CCT. Just be careful and know what you are doing while tinkering with an OEM one. They are not build the same as the manual CCT.
