Default Air Filter question

So I want to preface this with the fact i feel really dumb asking this. But i recently downgraded from the K&N Filter to the stock honda paper filter. My question is that its not labeled which way is up. so which is up? lol my filter has a metal type grate on one side and not the other. Anyone have any idea which way its supposed to go??

I do believe the metal grate is the top side.

i thought it would only properly fit one way i am probably wrong though. but i could have swore it would only work on one side. but i would think that it would tell you whice way is up or down

The metal screen is for keeping large debris out from between the fins of the paper element... It would be useless if the metal screen was on the bottom.

Not true at all. It would keep carb gremlins from moving up and through the filter, into the airbox, where it could then eat it's way into the gas tank, causing an explosion.

The metal always goes DOWN!

My mistake, I had a look at the filter on my bench and the screen is a flash screen... It keeps flames contained in the lower air box in case of a back-fire

Wait hold on... so I was right... it keeps stuff from coming out the carbs, starting a fire, and potentially causing your gas tank to explode?

Damn I'm good!

I think they are more concerned with the paper air filter element burning up, but it could potentially be a big fire if there's something seriously wrong with your bike (IE, timing is way out causing combustion on the intake stroke)
