Default Swapping Fuel Tanks

Hey guys, I was attempting to put a new (to me) fuel tank on my 929 and when I unbolted the fuel pump from the bottom of the tank, I noticed a pile of metal coils stuffed into the bottom of the pump, almost like drill bit cuttings...

Is this normal?

Also, when I swap over the pump to the new tank and go to fire it up, is there anything special that needs to be done other than cycle the fuel pump a few times with the key? Is there any special bleeding procedure?

As always, thanks again for all the great info on this site!!

I'd say those metal shavings aren't normal! Is there an aftermarket fuel cap on the tank? PO probably didn't think about the metal falling into the tank. I'd make sure its all out before you put it all back together. A few good shaking rinses with a bit of fuel should do it.

Electric fuel pumps are self priming. You may want to cycle the key a few times.

Yes, the PO that had it before me bashed in the top of the tank to make it into a stunt bike (by the looks of the side guard bars he was too chicken to try anything!!) and installed an aftermarket cap......geeez.

It's all making sense now....

Thanks...

Well, after careful extraction, it turns out that someone dropped a steel scrubber pad into the tank and it somehow wrapped itself around the base of the pump. Almost like a wad of steel wool, and had to disassemble the pump mount to get it out.

....weird...

Make sure to buy new crush washers for the banjo fitting. I tried to reuse mine but was unsuccessful.

Boys, you can't imagine what I have all found with this thing!! Lol...been a make-work project for a couple months now.

Good thing it came pretty cheap.

Good thinking on the aluminum washers...to be honest I have had the tank off and on a couple times now with no leaks, but I'm sure I'm pushing my luck! Thanks!
