Default My first sports bike.

After a week or two of shopping around, I picked up this 03 Cbr600rr last night.

I was a mechanic for a while before losing my job last year, but I have never touched a bike. Was wondering if I should take it in for a little tune up? Or anything? Any opinions or suggestions would be great.

But picked her up around 730 last night about a hour away from my place and she was perfectly fine on the freeway, no problems, no weird sounds, etc.

If she was mine and had run fine for your hour trip home then it looks like you bought a good one . Looks pretty aswell mate.
In my opinion you can treat bikes a bit like women. Some you wanna keep for a while.....some are "Friday night specials".
If your gonna keep her, seeing as you dont know her history, there`s nothing like a strip down, examine, and put back together to put any doubts to bed. Who knows whats hiding under that plastic. Helps you get to know her in depth.
If shes not gonna be so "special"....just ride her and have fun, then pass her on (at a price obviously) for someone else to have a go on (hahaha)

haha nice use of words wes. She is definitely something I plan on keeping for a long while. Made a few big sacrifices, selling my truck being one, not to appreciate her. Maybe on my next day off Ill really sit down and go over the bike piece by piece to get to know it, like you said. Appreciate the advice.

My basic advice, would be get the manual. Do any maintenance indicated,
up to and including current mileage. i.e. brakes, seals, inspect and clean all
electrical connectors and wiring. Even if it's running well, run some seafoam or other
carb/injector cleaner, through a couple of tanks. Of course, all fluids get changed.
Brake, coolant, oil.

Check the r/r for signs of failure. These are one of the only flaws, in a great bike.
It's enough of an issue, I would recommend the up-grade, as a basic maintenance task.

Personally, I think bikes are easier to wrench then cars, so you should have a leg up on the average owner.

Welcome to the forums, too, ;-)

Thanks for all the tips and advice. Really appreciate it. I was thinking about replacing all the fluids like you stated to be sure everything is ok and so i can have my own time line when it was all done. I will be headed to a local shop on saturday to pick up some gear and to pick up a manual. Im definitely looking forward to getting my hands familiar with this bike. Thanks again!

oh and what did you mean by r/r?
