Default hard cold start

so my 96 i bought seems to take a little bit longer to start when its been sitting over night then i feel it should. I push the choke down and press and hold the start button and it turns over for about 10 seconds. Then it starts sputtering the motor for about another 10 seconds (while still holding the start button because if i let go it wont stay running). Then it eventually decides to stay running. Now after the bike has been started once for the day, it fires right up no problem the rest of the day.

also, i have tried giving it a little gas to try to keep it running while trying to start it, and ive tried giving it no gas thinking i may have been flooding the carbs. Both ways its the exact same result.

input?

WORD Jayman!

That's completely, absolutly normal. Just the wonderful world of carbureted bikes. Everyone's is different, and with enough playing around with throttle, choke, petcock, etc, you'll figure out what the "secret code" is to get your bike going every time.

from what I am learning, slow starts are due to fuel screws being too lean. My bike does it too. Choke ON helps,(more fuel) but if I touch the throttle (more air) it won't start. I will be tinkering with the carb settings soon here, but that is most likely your problem. Does it take a minute to run correctly too once it finally starts up?

what you will have to do is mess with your pilot screws, located on the bottom of your carbs. Turning them counter clockwise will richen up the circuit. There is a way more precise method of tuning your pilot jets, you can find it in a shop manual, But usually you can get close without it. When I find my manual and get the time to type it up, I shall.

That could work if it is, in fact, the problem. I do it the ghetto way by just cranking up the idle screw. Gets it started every time.

The idle adjuster is nothing but a throttle plate screw. It is the same thing as opening up your throttle just a hair, or if you back the screw out, it will close your plates as much as possible. If you want the max life out of your spark plugs and the best performance out of your bike, tuning the carbs is a better choice.
