I rushed home at lunch parked my car, forked down some food and hopped on my bike. Pulled out of the driveway and about 100 feet away by bike lurched and then the revs skyrocketed. Pulled over and saw my chain hanging down. It is not broken but i think i might of stripped the front sprocket or the chain just popped off. Has anyone ever had thier chain pop off?
Also when i take the bike apart to look it the sprocket is damaged what size sprockets and chain am i looking for. I do not want any tooth changes i just want the stock chain and sprocket size.

I am just bummed since it is nice outside and i am stuck in a cage, i'm glad it happened only 100 feet from home tho

Stock chain is a 530.
Stock sprockets are 15 in front and 43 in the back.

 

Must b nice. My bike has been in pieces in the garage for 2 weeks now, and the weather was crappy for the last 3 weeks before that.

 

Not so fast there...

Not all F3's use a 530 chain. The 97 and 98 use a 525 chain and sprockets. Same number of teeth on the sprockets though. Make sure you get sprockets for a 525 chain.

Take some photos (clear and sharp) of what you see. I've never seen the chain come off a bike before and it would be interesting to see.

 

You need to figure out how your sprocket got damaged, as well. They're not exactly soft pieces of metal.

Take the tire hugger and fairings off and check for any superfluous damage the flinging chain may have caused.

I doubt there is any damage from the chain since i was going about 10mph since i had just pulled out of the driveway.

I will take pictures as well to show what has happened, i am just afraid that when i take the covers off i will see something terrible and expensive.

Also if the chain did just pop off, should i still get a new chain set or just put the old chain back on and re-tension it? What kind of damage should i be looking for on the chain/sprockets to see if they should be replaced?

Inspect the chain for broken links. Just go through each side one by one, look for missing or plates, bent joints, and also wiggle the joints. Shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes.

On the sprockets, look for bent or cracked off teeth, or for the entire sprocket to be bent.

It is totally posisble that SOMEONE (we won't say who) wasn't doing their regular maintenence, and the chain tension just got so loose that it got thrown off. If all your parts look good, soak it in Simple Green for an hour or so, then pull it out, wipe it down and rinse the hell out of it with Brakleen and wipe it again. Put it back on the bike, ADJUST THE TENSION, then lube it like you just got a new porno and your parents are gone for the night.

 

The chain slack was checked and the proper tension was put on the chain 1200 miles ago. I'm on top of the upkeep of the bike.

It's good for soaking, but for general cleaning, I love the Brakleen.
