anyone familiar with powder coating?
Hey guyswondering if any of you know anything about podwer coating? I am going to powder coat my top triple tree cover and it has a few small dings in the surface.(my mistake) anyways i was wondering if i put a skim coat of body filler over the surface dings if the powder coat will still adhere? Any kind of input would help.
Thanks guys,
Brian

I've heard that the heat from powder coating messes up bondo/body filler. It releases gas and bubbles or something when heated. One thing that can take the heat which you could use is JB-Weld. Fill in the dings with it, sand it down flush, and then it should be good to coat.
-1, powder coating works by giving the metal a positive current, so when the negatively charged powder are sprayed on the metal it sticks. Then baked to a hardened coating. Since the bondo or filler can't be charged the powder coating won't stick. Weld those little dents in and grind them down then powder coat it.
The powder is not made of metal. It's a plastic resin that's attracted by a "static" electrical charge. Just like rubbing a silk cloth against a glass rod, you get a static electrical charge, or rubbing a balloon against your hair and watching it stick to your head. The outgassing of the bondo would be an issue as it would produce bubbles, but the JB Weld (provided it's mixed without bubbles in it) would be just fine.
