Default Do It Yourself Powder Coating?

Does or has anyone done their own powder coating before? I'm thinking of getting a kit and I'm looking at the Eastwood hotcoat single voltage coater. Wondering if anyone has had much luck with doing there own powder coating and also wondering whether satin black or flat black would be a good choice as far as matching the factory black metal parts on a bike.

Anyone with info would be much appreciated to speak it!

I have a friend that has done many car parts. its pretty good. He hasn't had any pealing issues or fading or anything. He's used them mainly on his muscle car projects, so they don't see the normal abuse as they get driven maybe 5,000 miles a year. So I don't really know about durability.

As far as looks, his parts have turned out as nice looking as any powdercoated parts I've seen factory or from any supplier. I don't know how well they would match up though. Even though they have different glosses, they are probably still different than what Honda uses for shades or gloss. It may match well, or it may not. Hard to say until you see it.

On a side note, a couple of things Im sure you already know, but worth mentioning. You will have to use an electric oven, not gas. The fumes that are put off from the powder as its curing are flamamble to open flame. Also, whatever oven you use, will not ever be able to be used for cooking again. You will have to have an oven dedicated to your garage.

If your going with the Eastwood kit get there new dual voltage gun, I find it's hard to lay dual coatings with the single low voltage the original Hotcoat gun offers.

I've often thoght of trying this. If you decide to move forward, make sure you take some photo's and let us know how it goes. I'd be really interested in how it turns out.

Good luck
