If you're not needing a lot of current (ie gps,phone,mp3),
easiest is a tap to the hot on the tail-light/license plate circuit. It's a switched circuit.
If you're wanting to pull more current than that (extra running lights, heated gear, etc),
you should go with a relay with the high-end tied to the battery (with an inline fuse)
and the low-end tied to the same tail-light circuit, as mentioned above (to enable switching).
