Default Cold Storage

My Cbr has been torn down and is gonna spend its time sitting in my garage all winter. Could anything bad happen to it while sitting in sub-zero teperatures, and if so what can I do to prevent something?

depends on how torn down.

if you have the engine out, drain all the fluids. pull the plugs out and spray some wd-40 into the cylinders to keep them lubricated. drain out the carbs completely. drain out the gas tank and leave it open. as long as the area is dry, everything should be fine. if it gets damp, get some moisture absorbant. i can't remember what the commercial name is, but it is a sack of pebbles that absorbs moisture and can be reused over and over again. it's like dessicant (sp?) packs that you find boxed with electronic parts.

if you have any rust spots on the frame, put some oil or wd-40 over it to keep the rust at bay. if you have the wheels off, let the air out. i usually put some armor all on the sidewalls to keep them from dry rot, just keep it off the tread.

if you have a battery tender, use it. if not, get one.

if at the very least all you did was drain the carbs and remove the battery, nothing really bad can happen as long as the bike iscovered. i've known people back east just remove the battery, top off the gas tank and cover the bike with a tarp leaving the bike next to the shed. you couldn't be worse off than that.

In short, no but that's all dependant on how you maintain your workspace (dust, dirt, etc).

If you have a way to maintain a temp anywhere above freezing, you should look into that as it will keep the moisture at bay.

I tore apart my FZ1 last winter and that sat for about 3 months during the "upgrade" process...no issues occured. Here's the link if you're interested.

I tend to agree with michigan313 for the most part. Either drain the tank/carbs completely or fill the tank up to the top with some fuel stabilizer. Put on a batter tender.

The only thing I might add is: Instead of WD-40 in the clys, just a little squirt of "Marvel Mystery Oil" instead.

I just let my bike be in the garage. I start it once a week and let it run, and ride it when it is not icy, or snowy. Thats not a bad thing is it? I am doing little odds and ins to it this winter to get it ready for summer. Mainly going over the wiring and cleaning up spots, and putting new wire if needed. So i want to be able to start the bike now and then anyways to make sure things are fine. My dad said he never winterized his bikes, and they were fine. He started weekly and rode also. We'll see i guess.

How would someone drain the carbs? I have the gas tank off the bike and there isn't any fuel in the line, will it be ok? Living in Wisconsin sucks.

if you look near the bottom of the carb, you will see a small screw. that is the drain screw. if you need a pic, i can post one.
