Fairing Mod: By brother's KTM 520 EXC snapped it's Sidestand Pivot Bolt.
Lucky for it my beautiful '90 CBR 1000F stopped it from falling to the ground.
Unlucky for my CBR it damaged the right side lower fairing (the most expensive fairing part).

sribop, that sucks.

Finding a new fairing for cheap that matches is gonna be tough. I'd probably just leave it the way it is. Even welding/patching will require painting.

dissection of the cbr 1000f cam chain tensioner
if you look at the postings you will see that i Hve changed it 3 times now ( easy but still a pain to have to do it so ofter )

basically the chian tensioner is operates in the following way:

1 initial tension is given by a spring acting on a lever and a piston

2 dynamic tension is done by hydraulic lock

why does it go wrong so often?

well the tensioner has to act against a variable chain tension of +- 50 kg each time a cam lobe passes over the rocker

how does it work ( when it works )
once installed the funnel collects oil and it goes towards the cylinder and piston and via little holes on the side and a tiny ball valve at the bottom works its way to the bottom of the cylinder
there it effectively locks up the piston via hydraulic lock

why does it fail?
my take on it :
1 the chain is too stretched and the piston is at the end of its travel ( earlier versions with mkI tensioners ) this is due to the chain and not the tensioner its self
2 the ball valve is clogged and wont let oil down
3 the ball valve is worn and lets the oil out too easily and wont lock up properly

basially there is nothing to repair and so you just have to get a new one

Classic,
That was at Jenolan Caves mate near Oberon in western NSW. I had no idea
you could ride through part of the caves. Was an awesome site. Not long out of there we got pi$$ed on until we reached our destination at Windsor. Not to worry though the rest of the trip was dry. If you ever get the chance to do the old Pacific Highway north of Sydney mate DO IT. An absolutely awesome piece of old road that is still in excellent condition and the twisties are something special. The old girl ate that road up with ease. There was one section we loved so much we just went back and forwards on it for an hour !!!! Can't wait to go back there.

There's a pretty good list of fork tube sizes here http://www.clubchopper.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=77043

It shows 90-97 all being 41.

Put the re balanced front wheel back on today but bar shake is still there so.......head stem bearings it is I suppose. Not to worry its a first for me so I will no doubt learn something. Also going to order a Acumen DGV ( combined voltmeter and gear indicator ). They are around $100 cheaper on fleabay with the postage included than buying them here.

Must look up that DGV product Bordo.

With your wheel wobble - just a thought- ya sure your forks are lined up right
in the clamps - reason I say it is I have worn head bearing in my 1990 but
she don't wobble because of it.

hi bordo
having the cbr about 15 yrs i ve been through all that
cbrs willl get tank slapping at from 60 to about 80 kmh and not becuase of the balancing
the balancing will only come into effect above 80 to 90 kmh
reason for handlbar shake in decending order
- too low tyre pressure front and back, cbr is very sensitive , needs to have enough air !!
- profile of the front tyre too round ( should be pointy , eg quite new )
- uneven wear on the tread ( stepping ) also seen as noisy and harsheness in front wheel riding
- worn front wheel bearings ( they fail often) replace both as a pair!!! you need to feed the bearing its self for rough spots
- worn steering head bearings ( lower one mostly ) will clunk on braking
- worn fork slider bushings
- warped front wheel ( but will vibrate al all speeds )
that about covers all the possibilities
let me know how you get on
