That's why I use Chain Wax. Stays on in the rain and last a long time. I doesn't make a mess. You may get some spotting on the rear wheel if you over do it.

On my 1,700 mile (2,700 km) ride last week, I hit the chain with a little wax on the morning of the second day. It didn't need it I figured I'd hit it before it did.

I usually go 600 mile (1,000 km) between lubing.

Thanks Indiana, don't really know what I'm doing yet.

Thanks for the info Tim. I'll check and see if its available here. I got the swingarm out today and stripped it back. Took me a while. ( About 3 hours with a wire brush in a drill and a paint scraper but it now has its first coat of primer and will dry tonight. I was tossing up whether to paint it a different colour but I think I will stick with silver. Seems to go well with the rest of the bike. I was thinking about going with black but it might be a bit much. I also re packed the bearings in the swingarm and the linkages and cleaned them up. Still waiting on the rubber chain guide.

I always wondered if those things were what they were cracked up to be. I've never had one and never will. I know there's some guys on the Blackbird forum that wouldn't be without them but they dont seem necessary to me. Each to their own. Cheers.

+1 Geoff
How difficult is it to run chain lube round your chain every 500 miles or so ?- takes about 3 minutes with a paddock stand, and you get full coverage.
No Scottoiler for me

the rubber chain guide. I found one on e-flea - just had other issues so it's still to be done.....

Was it a new one Pete ? I got one at the local stealer and paid $55AUD. I'm still waiting for it. Seemed silly to have the swing arm off and not replace the rubber chain guide. It still had plenty of km in it but now I wont have to worry about it.

I gave the swing arm another coat of paint today and also stripped and painted the metal exhaust covers that go on each side. They are now flat black. They look good. I was over everything back there being all silver. Good thing is I can always take em off and strip em and re paint em again when I get sick of it. In saying that though I donty know what colour I would go with.

Problem with scott oilers is they only lube one side of the chain' Also you still have to clean your chain regular or all the crap sticks to it and helps to wear it out quicker, And the oil isnt cheap. So you may as well clean your chain as normal and then use chain wax or what ever you prefer to lube your chain. Oh and save yourself a handfull of cash not buying the scott oiler in the first place.

I've got a Scott-oiler fitted to my bike, it was there when I bought it but I've never used it.

I use Parafin to clean the chain and a touch on a rag to clean the rear wheel before washing the bike. Works a treat and everything comes up like new

No Geoff they said it was secondhand but it doesn't look it.
Can't remember what I paid but it wasn't anywhere near what you did. I'll look it up if it's important ?

The reason for using wax is that it is carried into the rollers and pins by alcohol or similar carrier that evaporates and leaves the wax. The wax hardens and under use it squeezes dirt and grid out from the pins and rollers. It self cleans. As it cakes it flakes off. I have never cleaned a chain. There is no sense of removing a lubricant from between the pins and rollers where you want it.

Also, oil floats on water where wax repels water, so on rainy days the wax last longer.

I never have to come to this section of the forum and reported of cleaning my chain or any other mess that oil would leave. Don't go crazy with it and you don't get it everywhere.

I spray the outside of the chain, concentrating on the o-ring areas and then the inside of the chain at the o-ring areas.

The rollers will turn black. When I see shiny areas of the rollers, it tells me that it is time for wax.
