Starter problem ?

Starter problem ?
This is a new one to me but perhaps one of our band has had this happen.....
Put the bike into first gear the other day, clutch in, pushed starter - slight dimming of panel lights but NOTHING from the starter - not a peep.
Played with the kill switch a couple of times....still nothing.
Put the bike in neutral and tried again.......fired up straight away.
(No, the side stand wasn't down) LoL
Anyone have a clue as to what's causing this ?
I'm baffled.
