lost spark?
Thanks Guy's i really appreciate your input , i have checked everything according to the troubleshooting guide in the manual... I have a 2 to 3 volt drop in Voltage from black and white wire to ground with ignition & kill switch turned on , the coils were out of spec on the primarys and the generator coils have continuity to ground at the spark unit connectors... So i assume that means the spark unit is bad ?
As I mentioned in my introduction to this forum, I'm in the process of resurrecting a 12/87 built Hurricane for an acquaintance. I do this sort of thing for local fellow riders as a hobby to earn some fuel money and save them lots of $. The bike had not been started for about 4 years and was in a sad state when delivered to me. First thing was to check if it would fire with a new battery and some starting fluid sprayed into the airbox. Nothing. Pulled the plug leads off 2 & 4 cyls, stuck in a couple of spare plugs in contact with the cam cover bolts for good earth, cranked it over and - no spark. Damn!
I searched and found this thread and excellent posts by dannoxyz on diagnosing the no spark issue - brilliant! After cleaning and checking continuity thru the associated wires and connectors and doing the testing as detailed in the relevant part of section 17 of the FSM, which showed that all was within spec or close to it, I did the noid light test he described in post 23. At this stage I had my son here to help as I needed 3 hands - 2 to hold the noid lights in place and 1 to turn the key on and press the starter button. To my pleasant surprise the noid lights flashed alternately, indication that the spark unit, wiring and pick-up coils were doing their job. Great! Next step was to remove the coils and bench test as described above - but before doing so I thought I'd reattach the coil wires and spare plugs and check for spark again. To my even greater surprise, the plugs sparked! Hmmm, obviously poor connecting wires to the coils or wires nearby. So I put the plug leads back where they belong, got my son to crank it while I sprayed some fluid into the airbox and VOILA - it fired!!!
Now onto the carbs - repair kits on order.
Many thanks to dannoxyz. I'm a bit smarter now thanks to him.
