Default Chain masterlink

Is anyone running the clip style masterlink or is everyone using rivet style? Local Honda shop told me it is ok to use clip style but am a little unsure. It's for my 88 1000f, don't think putting out enough horsepower to make a differece.

I just replaced chain a sprockets this year. Rivet was the only thing available. With the HP put out from 1000cc it is only recommended to use rivet. DID Xring was what I used.

Iused a clip link for 20,000km with no problems. But I put some silicone on the link to make sure it cant come off.

But considering a broken chain can mean a broken engine or rear wheel lockup there are alternatives.

EK make a screw type Masterlink the is much better than rivet and almost as good as rivet ones.

For my current chain I installed the chain, sprockets and clip link myself. Then I rode it to a bike mechanic and he just charged me some beer to install the rivet link.

In the US tho on ebay I have soon complete rivet & splitting tools for chains for $40.

On my first bike, a Yamaha XJ600s with 61 BHP, I used clip link.
The clip fell of 3 times. I tried gluing it on, but it would´nt last.
thank god the coverplate did´nt come off as well
So on a bike with twice as much horsepower, hell no.

It is easy to use a rivet link. I got a tool for it, that cost me about 30 euros.
It it used both for placing the coverplate, which can be hard to do with normal tools, and it expands the rivet.

here a link from a german dealer:

I am currently using a clip. They are not a problem as long as you put them on correctly. The closed end goes to the front of rotation and the open-end trails. If you put it on backwards the clip will come off under acceleration. Most chains that I have bought come with clip type masters in the box.

Also, when putting the clip on, use pliers placed on the closed end of the clip and the pin of the link. Never pry the clip open with a screwdriver to install. That will weaken the clip and you will have trouble.

Thanks for the opinions. Talked to local Honda dealership mechanic, he is riding 2 month old Hyabusa with clip style for racing and told me. Put it on correctly with closed end towards rotation and no problems will occur. Biggest thing he emphasised was "chain maintanance".
