A lot of guys remove it all together. Putting heat reflective foil under there would be a good idea. I just marked mine to follow under the tail and cut it with some good sheet metal shears. I then painted it matte black with some high-temp engine paint. You don't even notice it under there now, but it still does its job. Be carefull washing under there though, the edges of the heat shield are sharp after you cut them!

I left my heat shield as it was and modded the plastic bits that most people toss.

I tossed it, well its hanging in my garage, and used the stick on heat reflective material that came with my rs5 much neater and haven`t had any heat problems.
