When you bought your bike...did you ride it back?
the last bike i had, 85 honda vf500f, we had to truck it back cause it didnt start. carbs just needed cleaned
and my f3 we had to truck it back as well, wouldnt start, and had no headlight, turnsignals, gauges, and a few other things, and riding it back in the dark, while its 35-40 degrees out and raining didnt sound like fun.

first bike (the f3), i trucked home (150 miles) and i had no experience other than my endorsement. otherwise i would have rode it home
1st 954 i rode home
2nd 954 i trailered home because the tranny was blown up
gs500 i rode home
old xs650 i trailered home because it did not run (gummed up carbs, ****ed points, flat tires, etc.)

It would have been illegal for me to ride mine home. Didn't even have a permit! I went to check out this bike and I have never even sat on a rocket before, but I knew it would be a good decision. Since it was an F2!!
my first bike, i bought off my roommate. i had been on a dirt bike twice, but have a high confidence level, and dont get the nervous jitters most people do.
i didn't have a helmet, or a car to go get one (had a DOT helmet at my moms, it was about 10 years old)
so i hopped on the POS that was held together with zip ties, and a bungee cord to keep the nose from falling onto the tire, and rode it in a circle around a parking lot across the street twice then rode it 20 miles over the mountain to my moms house. got my helmet, and a pair of gloves, and rode it to my dads to show him my POS, then home. parked it in the back, and stripped it to the frame, and completely rebuilt everything, bike looked better than new when i reassembled it. i rode it to work 3 times, let my roommate borrow it to get smokes, and he calls me for a ride. (DOH!)
my katana 750, i picked up about an hour away from home, was smart enough to have a riding jacket and all that jazz. and i rode it home in the rain. i remember being on the highway, passing a truck (following my friend) and seeing a "lane ends" sign. i hit the throttle, and passed the truck with ease, looked down and saw i was doing 115 MPH. i remember thinking this thing is rediculous...
then i took my buddies 225whp zx-10R for a quick ride a few months later... made my bike feel like a moped. time to go bigger.

1st bike was a gixxer6 and I'd never even sat on a bike before. I had to hand the seller an extra 10 bucks to call in late to work and ride it to my house for me.
2nd bike is my f4i, rode it home (about ten miles from the country outside town to my apt), then didn't wanna stop so took her to the highway and checked out what she could do.

Rode dirt for 10+ years and a buddy's motorcycle 1 mile before buying mine. Test rode 3 bikes at the dealership (almost dropping 1 of them!).
Bought my 07 600RR and did the 50 mile ride home which consisted of backroads and 30 miles of a major interstate. It was a great time! Learned a lot on that ride lol. One of those lessons was to respect the hell out of the machine and street riding is completely different than dirt!

I bought an f3 off of my friend that I worked with at the time. He lived right by work, but I live on the other side of the city and never rode in traffic before. He wasn't planning on it, but thankfully, he agreed to ride it over to my house.
