heres an opinion from someone who shoots A LOT and has fired sooo many guns.

Looking at your comment of 1911's jamming, if you're shooting high quality ammo through a high quality gun, you shouldn't have to worry. As several have mentioned, .40 is a better round. not only is it cheaper, it has a higher velocity with little reduced takedown force. But a .45 always has that nice powerful feel. For home defense though, you should be looking at a handgun with a shorter frame. Something like a glock 23, springfield xd, or sig sauer p226/229. All of those guns are shorter, come in a variety of calibers and have been proven in the field. Sigs are more particular about their ammo though.

Do not skimp on ammo for home defense. Range shooting, fine. But use Good rounds for your home. I like my springfield xd a lot and own the 4" version. A 4" barrel is much easier to move around with in tight spaces, like a home and the xd is not picky on its ammo. They also have a rail for light/laser and sights are easy to replace with tririum or night sights (which you can buy on the gun).

As for 1911's. Its my favorite gun. Kimber makes some choice guns now with soooooo many accessories and upgrades, but you can get a GI version from Rock Island Armory for $350 and that is a solid pistol as well.

Sorry for the long post. Hope it helps! hit me up with any questions.
