wearing a helmet
While were on the topic of helmets, I got two stories to share.
First one.
1986, being the foolish youngin back then, I had a bike that had a kick stand sensor on it, but it didn't work. I pulled out of a drive way turning right onto a straight away. As I tooled down the road getting ready for the left handed sweeper, I saw a guy flashing his lights at me at the same time I started to lean and feel the kickstand was down. I tried and was successful to counter push the bike and sweep the kickstand up. Happening all to fast was the edge of the road and that 8 foot chain link fence I was bearing down into. As I hit the fence, my foot peg got caught in the fence and rolled the barbed topped fence around me as I flew all over and ended up hitting a tree. Later, in the hospital, the doctors told me that having the fence around me acted as a brace for my head and neck. Having the helmet on, leathers, gloves and boots, is was prevented skin wounds, but did not prevent the broken ankle, knee, femur, two wrists, 4 ribs, and a concusion. I lived to ride another day.
Second one:
It was 1988 and I saw a best friend die from an accident. A tractor trailer was in the left lane, and he went around it veering out into the right lane. Well he veered out too far and caught gravel with his back tire in which he lost control, shot across both 2 lanes, in front of the tractor trailer, only to hit the guard rail causing enough traumatic brain injuries from which he passed from. The fact that he was wearing a helmet did not save his life, but it did allow his family to have an open casket calling hours and funeral service for him.
So many uncontrollable variables can happen that one wouldn't think could, but can have a devistating affect. A bug in the mouth can brake a tooth. Dust from a crop dusting or spraying can cause your eyes to blur long enough to accidentally change lanes into oncoming traffic, or hit a pothole inadvertantly not realising it's there. Let us not forget the rock thrown by some hooligans when you ride through an unfamilar location.
Is it worth it just to express your freedom of live free or die as in the case of some states no helmet law? Wearing or not wearing a helmet is not a fashion statement which, warrants ridicule, praise, or a second look by a chick or a guy.
I don't get it, thousands of dollars on a bike, bike not even 2 cents of common sense to protect yourself from others being stupid.

"Let us not forget the rock thrown by some hooligans when you ride through an unfamilar location." this brought back a forgotten memory. About five years ago I was riding through a not so savory part of town. I saw a group of about five or six kids standing together. I was just riding through at about 25-30 mph. I saw these kids and thought nothing of it. So I just keep riding when all the sudden a f'in beer bottle comes flying right in front of me, maybe 4 inches from my face. Luckily I was wearing a helmet, if I hadnt that bottle would have absolutely busted out a tooth or two. Just goes to show you never know what might happen. I stopped the bike and turned around, by this time of course the little hoodrats scattered like roaches. Ill-mannered little punks, I bet their parents ride with no helmet when they can pull themselves off the couch in their trailer park.

Down boy...it was a tasteless joke. and I'm not the only one that though of it.
I was just more direct. To be quite honest, I know you can kick my a$$. I really wouldn't have said it if I felt that you would take offense to it. Considering the way the thread was going bah...nevermind. Sorry HC, meant no harm.

First let me say I am non-homophobic, but apparently, that seems to be issue for some people around here. Second of all I am pro-helmet. So I'm not quite sure how I'm supposed to take this statement from you woo but if the above was directed as a cheap shot at myself. I will be more than happy as usual to hand, you your *** in a handbasket and if I have misunderstood your reference here. Feel free to clarify the matter since were also on the subject of shortcomings around here. It is no secret I'm a big enough man to admit when I'm wrong, or when I have misjudged someone
