Quitting
ORIGINAL: StuDog44
I'm in on this, although I will admit I just smoked a cig. I'm in the pack-a-dayer club and have been pretty much since I started. I've wanted to quit for the last year or two but haven't really WANTED to, if that makes sense. I also am a firm believer that it's all mental and you have to really want to quit in order to succeed. I told myself when I started that I'd quit when I was 25 and that was three years ago. Who is all in on the NO SMOKING band wagon so I know who I can message when I'm having a rough day! [8D] I think my plan of attack is to try to not smoke as many cigs a day until this weekend and then start fresh on Monday morning(so I guess I can't really post on here until Monday..[:'(]..) and go cold turkey, and hopefully be determined enough to really quit! Sorry to ramble. I love this place!

First day was the hardest for me man, just stick through it and don't give in
I quit last Saturday, had a few Thursday when I was drunk (watch drinking mixed with cig availability, you WILL smoke), but haven't wanted any since, still don't, it's weird, I've just lost the craving it seems, might come back to bitch slap me in the face later, but for now I'm good.

I read a book called Tipping Point by malcolm gladwell, also he wrote a book called Blink, both heavily examine sociological/psychological behavior with A TON of scientific studies and whatnot as backup. Tipping Point is based on "things" that go from nothing to super popular. I'm not going to get deep into that but a chapter or two covers smoking and the different types of smokers as well as why people smoke, possible reasons why it's so popular and how much anti-smoking ads are so ineffective. I recommend these two books to anyone with a curious mind because things aren't always what they seem, you'll really be surprised by a lot of the stuff in the two books. Anyway, a few studies concluded that different people respond to nicotine differently. Some are highly susceptible to addiction while others are completely "immune" to the addictive effects, something about nicotinic receptors in the body. I can recall numerous times a friend and I would sit around and puff black and milds 1 after the other(one night drinking the two of us sat around and drank some tequila and I smoked 18 captain black cigars(1.2mg nicotine) over the course of about 4 hours, just something to do I guess lol) I'm not a smoker but I've partaken and it's never once affected me, while some people, friends of mine, can quit for a year or a few months but get right back on at the slightest tense situation. Interesting to think about.
seriously those two books are really hard to put down
good luck to those quitting, my grandma was a chain smoker all her life and is sitting in a hospital bed slated to die this week. The only usable lung she has left is a 1/4 of her right lung. Her death will be attributed to simple pneumonia but with ****ty lungs you can't fight it very well...smoking gets to sneak out the back door as the real culprit.
