Err... wait a sec. You had the petcock in the On position, ran out of gas and never turned it to Reserve???

One of 2 things here. You weren't truly out of gas and its safe to feel foolish. Or you were truly out of gas and for some reason you're draining the tank regardless of whether its in On or Reserve.

Try to remember what it was like when you first started riding. You knew nothing about the machine other than you wanted to ride it. What does this do...whats that for...why do I have to check that? I was fortunate to have someone around to foster that interest who was a life-long rider himself.
Fuel tap position is a good thing to take note of. So is fuel and oil level. Is there air in the tires. Do the brakes work? You know, the pre-ride inspection.
May I suggest taking a MSF course?

yeah i didnt even think to check the gas. like i said the thing was leaking oil, pretty bad actually, so all i had on my mind was to get it home checking fuel was really not even on my mind at all ha ha. but yeah i think if i had turned it to reserve i would have made it home. but at least i got the oil thing worked out ha ha.

Hey! I forgot to turn the petcock to the On position after the last fueling. I never forgot to turn it to the Reserve position after running out of gas!

That wasn't the point. Just verifying he did forget to turn it to Reserve. Cause if he didn't, if it was On and he bone dried the tank, he's got a petcock issue too and will have to be careful about his fuel situation.

Im pretty paranoid about running out of fuel.
To be honest, I don't really know if the 05 600RR even has a reserve or not. It does have fuel level indicator.

Funny thing, my buddy's GSXR does not have an indicator, but he knows it's time to fuel up when I'm at 1/4 tank, which means he is near empty. lol.

Yea I usually go off of my trip meter. Reset it every time I fill up and at 120 miles I know it'll be time to fill up soon. I usually get about 130 out of my bike commuting and 140-150 out riding before I have to hit reserve...
