I haven't read the responses, but if I were a first time rider, I would save some money. What I would do is buy a handgun and blow my brains out. You would get the same result for less money. Another option is to hijack an aircraft carrier, and take that around for a spin (it may be lighter). I am obviously being a smartass, but your friend needs to start on something smaller. I think most will say 1000 cc's is too much, many will say 600 cc's is too big, and a ton of us will say a 250 cc bike is great to start on...the ZX-14 is suicide!

That was a bad accident, and it sucks to see suck things, but page 5 of the other forum had this photo which I couldn't help but laugh at:
edited to remove photo. After reading a few more pages, they really took that whole thing way too far, so I decided to remove the photo.

Actually, the ZX-14 (or Hayabusa, same deal) aren't as bad as the liter SS bikes (no, that's NOT saying they're ok for beginners!). But the added wheelbase and mass slow things down a little bit, so you don't get, for example, the instant second gear stand-up at 85mph I got when inadvertently over-enthusiastic passing an RV on my gixxer1k.
I actually sold the gixxer for a ZX-14 because I can use MORE of the engine on the street. Plus the awesome smooth power everywhere, great brakes and clutch - it's just a premium bike. I've taken mine to several track days (before getting a dedicated F4i) and Pridmore's STAR school. They drag fairing without any complaint.
But no, not for a beginner in any way, shape, or form. Imagine the urge of a CBR1000 at 10K rpm - but everywhere in the rev range.
