I am in the same sorta situation, i need a place soon because i got in an argument with a roommate (more then that, but anyways.) and i don't to move back home, although i might have to because of the short notice. any ways, you get what you pay for. I don't like apt.s as much as houses, but that's just me, and i would prefer a **** hole i good location over a nice apt. in a ****ty spot. houses are usually cheaper (here at least) but you pretty much have to have roommates lined up when you sign the lease, or find people that need to fill a room.

I really hope my next place has a garage too.

Money is the key! My deposit was one months rent and then you also pay the first months rent up front so for me i had to have $1400 in cash up front.

to find apartments just check with your local realtors office. And to find a roommate or fine people looking for roommates you can try craigslist. I know some guys that all met on there and got a house, went pretty smoothly, just make sure you meet the people and make sure they are not jackholes

The security deposit is normally the same amount as the 1st months rent. Also, its only partly true that you wont get your deposit back. Most places will give you a decent portion of it back, but always find small little things to subtract mabye $75. Depends on your landlord. So expect to shell out the amount for two months rent when you move in.

I dont anyone has mention you will also need to set up your cable, and electric (some places gas and sewage). You can usually get a decent deal on standard cable plus internet for a year, then you "lose" your special price. If you are living by yourself, expect an additional $75-150 for utilities (cable, electric, etc) a month depending on where you live.

As far as looking for a roommate, honestly I would get a place to yourself. Yes you may pay a little extra, but trust me it is worth it. Especially if you are ending up with a complete stranger. Your chances of getting your deposit back is a lot higher when you can account for everything, and not someone else as well.

Hopefully this will help you out a little. Look for places that have slightly higher rent, but utilities included. It will save you money in the long run. Goodluck!

Edit: I forgot to mention how to actually go about finding one. Craigslist, local Apartment finders that are usually in the little magazine racks in the walk ways for grocery stores, and just other various apartment finders on the net.

Been watching craigslist and only 1 post has posted something in my area. I was emailing them for a couple of days but the deal fell though when his roommate decided to stay. I looked at the prices for the apartments on campus. A four bed room is $2780 and I believe its for only 4 months and a $200 app fee. Basically, $750 a month for a shared apartment. It does include all utilities but still. Most room mates want around $400-500 for rent and utilites. Just have to come up with deposit. So, if I get though the first month finding a room mate off campus I think it will be cheaper. I mean, jesus $750 for an on campus apartment. How the hell do they expect me to eat.

I would stay away from campus apartments and commute a little if you can help it. In collge, all apartment complexes were unethical ***-raping douchebags that would change their lease mid-contract to include the banishment of beer kegs. We told them to get lost when they saw a keg on our balcony. They called the police. Good thing I had a copy of my lease saying nothing about beer kegs...

Oh yeah, The police basically told the apartment manager to go eff himself right in front of me. It was awesome...

I've had 3 room mates. I'm done with that crap.

I'd just go buy a tent and stay at the local park with my bike. Nothing like making sweet sweet love to your bike in the middle of no where.
