Dad won't let get bike, Says its DEATH
if you're getting a bike to save on gas money its a pretty stupid idea. The bike itself is $4000+ not to mention gear, tax, and licensing. You can buy alot of gas for $5000. Doesn't seem like your saving anything to me. Bikes are not saving you anything if anything they are tearing you and your dad apart.
that is a tough one..your dad is just looking out for you. when i was a teenager i always wanted a bike, my mom was always, hell no! i moved out right after i turned 18 when i was still in high school and never had the money to buy one until last january. i bought it when i was 20. my dad comes over and helps me work on it and buys me parts for it now, my mom has gotten used to the idea, but she is still freaked. everytime there is an accident locally she calls me all paranoid. just realize that with motorcycle its typically either immature riding or the other guy. even the best gear will do nothing in some circumstances. unless you can convice your pops otherwise, i would say wait, i know that is not what you want to hear, but i waited like 5 years before i finally got a bike. another thing to think about that camaro pointed out, these things do not maintain themselves, you WILL put more and more money into a bike than you think. i know i have put more into mine than i paid for it.
I have to agree with everyone who says it's his house and his rules. if you don't have the $$ to pay for your own place, who is paying for college? Who will pay the insurance? Who is paying for your current auto and insurance?I would also agree witha poster whosaid thake the safety course. I'm sure that will help a little bit.Your dad has a very valid point, according to my state's motorcycle manual, more than half of ALL riders will have an accident within the first 6 months of riding. Do you honestly think that the half thatdid not have an accident were the ones who said "I'll be careful" and thehalf who crashed didn't care?
As to bikes being more expensive than cars, if that were true, the people in GB and Europe would not own a single bike. Fact is that besides gas being cheaper, insurance is cheaper, maintenance is most often cheaper, and even parts are often cheaper. (you can do a lot of stuff on a bike that you can't touch on a car without a lot of specialized tools and knowledge)if you buy a new car, you are looking at $15k-$20k. If you buy a used car, be prepared to add tires and do plenty of maintenance as the car gets older. Plus, riding a bike keeps the wear off the car, sothe car shouldtheoretically last longer. Look at it this way, the federal govt says the average car costs $.48 a mile to operate, including purchase, averaged over the life expectancy. Do you think a bike costs more or less than that?

I'm 19 years old and have been riding quads and bikes for quite a while now, except i have never drove any of them on the road(legally). Now that i want to get a cbr600rr i've sold all my quads and finally have the money for one........Except there's a major problem! My dad says i cannot get one until i am 21 if i live at his house--Which basically means i can't get one until im 21, i'm a college student so moving out is out of the story. He says everyone he knows that has a bike has been in some type of evidence. And he always brings up how many people have died this spring on motorcycles just in out County alone. He also said i need to learn the rules of the road more than what i already know---yet i've been driving a car for 3 years and have had no accidents or even tickets.. I want a bike really bad and it would also save on gas money. I don't know what to do, and i DO NOT want to wait til im 21. It's like just taking away my hobby and it doesn't feel good. I completely understand about how he doesn't want anything bad to happen to me, but i am a responsible person. I think for the most part he's worried about the other drivers on the road... He's told me how many times hes pulled out in front of a bike and not even seen it. He also has cameras in his trucks at work for safety and last summer one truck recorded a motorcycle accident where you could hear him screaming right before he wrecked and later died.
So i guess i'm asking you guys, how can i get my dad to let me have a bike?> Any info and help would be appreciated, i dont know what to do, its what i've wanted for so long and i finally have the cash for one and i get told NO. help And plus i've already bought all my gear and have taken the MSF course, now i have my license.[/align]

I think it is a good idea to get on a forum, even if you don't have a bike. To me, it is like doing research. If youcan gain knowledge from other riders that is great. There is a wealth of knowledge on these forums (especially this one)

lol dude if you have money to be burning on bikes and other bull**** you don't need, then you need to movethe f**kout of your parents house.at 19 you're too old to have your parents telling you what to do. prove your responsibility by living on your own, that way you can do what the hell you want

do you really think your dad will throw you out if you brought home a bike ? ive had a few friends who have had parents threaten that and you know what happened ... nothing. their parents werent comfortable with the idea but allowed it eventually.
same thing with my mom she never wanted me or my brother to have motorcycles. after we got our bikes she slowly started realizing it was what we wanted and were going to do itso now all she wants is for us to be safe.
there is a local stunt spot near my house and on bike night (thursdays around here) my parents will go out and watch all the stunters and check out the awsome bikes . i might just be really lucky to have great parents but i think all parents just want their kids to be happy and safe.
it seems you have taken the right steps (took the msf class, got your licence, bought the gear) so you are showing your dad that you can be responsible and level headed about it. maybe you should justhave aheart to heart with hima nd find out whats really keeping him from trusting you on a bike.

Gaining knowledge is great and a forum could be a good way to do that. But when did anonymous people on the 'net become good sources of info to deal with family problems. And this is exactly what this is, a family problem. Or at least a family situation. Why isn't he asking his friends, neighbors, relatives, co-workers or classmates? Seemsto me that anyone at 19 and going out to the internet to ask how to deal with Dad and his wishes to not buy a bike is proving that he isn't ready to make decisions on his own. 19 and living at home you are "stuck in-between." Either you are an adult or your're a kid living at home, and no one on any forum can understand your family. And all the advice to just do it and hide it or whatever is exactly what this "kid" doesn't need. He needs to talk with his dad and work things out within his own family. I didn't buy a bike until I was 30 but I still talked to my parents about it out of respect (and that fact I had several bikes accidents as a kid) and I didn't want them to worry. This is a decision my wife and I made within our own family and the rest was a courtesy to the other members of my family. This is the way it works in my family and no one may understand that. Asking for advice is great but ultimately you need to make your own decisions.
All of this is opinion and maybe that's the point of this whole thing...
