Your right. I don't condone shooting rock throwing kids, however, I did think the whole situation qualifies for a Darwin Award.
There are no intelligent participants. We can armchair quarterback the situation and both the kids, their lack of parental supervision, and the shooters reaction are all bad. The only positive here is that the kid survived.

Your right. I don't condone shooting rock throwing kids, however, I did think the whole situation qualifies for a Darwin Award.

This illustrates where the problem is going I think. A lot of kids are out of control and are never caught or penalized. So their acts escalate and escalate. Eventually they're going to push the wrong person. And that person won't have a crossbow. He'll have a gun, he will start firing and he won't stop till someone stops him... or he runs out of ammo.
Little bit of the devils advocate here. As a kid I also threw water balloons at cars... till one night a one in a million throw through the open window of a passing cop car and the ensuing 10 block foot chase he gave me. I did, I nearly got caught and I definitely had the chit scared out of me. **** what the cop would have done to me... my mother's justice woulda been 10x worse when he brought me home. This kid got overly penalized, yes. But at the same time I'm fairly positive his mischief won't escalate into worse behaviors after that.
Would I shoot a kid with a crossbow for throwing rocks at me? No but I'd beat his *** all the way to his doorstep.
Would I shoot a kid with my gun for trying to drag me off my bike while surrounded by 40 more kids?
... lets hope that's a bridge I don't have to consider crossing
