Default advice on 600rr purchase

Ok, so here is the opportunity that has presented itself to me. A local guy has an 03 600rr, 7,xxx miles, jardine pipe. I e-mailed the guy and he said it needs all new plastics. Also in his responses to inquiries from his ad, he makes it sound like it had a salvage title when he got it. He started out asking $3,500 but is now down to $3,000. I haven't seen any pictures or anything of it, but I'm thinking about going to check it out this weekend.

Is this a bike I should just flat out avoid based on the likelihood its been wrecked twice? Should I offer something closer to $2,000 for it? Looking for some wisdom and insight.

thanks guys

I mayself would never buy a anything with a salvage title. The only way I would buy a salvage bike is to make it a parking lot sunter and the price would have to be killer. If all the plastics are gone then I bet there is other damage to be found. Go look at it if you want, but I think by the time you would get the bike back up to par you could just get a nicer bike that is ready to go.

I'd pass on something like that. You will come across a good deal if you're are patient. Wait for the guy getting divorced, or the kid that scared himself, etc...

If you are concerned with how its going to look then I'd say pass it up. The money you will have to spend to get it to look good again is worth buying in a nicer condition. If the price was nuts then I'd say go for it but 3k plus another 5-600 (low ball) for fairings adds up.

Well, here's my logic. Knowing the bikes history, if it were in good shape, how much would you pay for it? Then I'd take that and subtract the 600-800 bucks to fix it up and see if its worth it. The blue book value for a clean title 03 is over $5500. I think I'm going to give the guy a call and see if I can't take a look at it, maybe snap a pic or two.

thanks for the input guys

Yup, get some pics, make sure she runs and moves under her own power, and look for bigger price tickets that matter more than fairings.... like frame damage, bent parts, wheels don't line up, etc etc.
