Purchase Advice
OK, I've been looking for an engine for 88 CBR1000. It appears that at 96K miles I'm starting to use oil. So, I am dealing with someone on a 88 CBR1000 that has been turned into a street fight. No pics yet. I really only need the engine but looking like I'll be getting the whole thing for $650. It has current license and tabs and is reported to be running great. I'm setting up a meet late this week to test ride it. Other than drivability, engine smoothness and shifting, noticeable leaks, brakes and suspension what should I be looking for? I've had mine for 2 years so other than being naked I should be able to feel any differences. Just looking for other suggestions on what to look for. Thanks.

There's always the dreaded cam chain rattle , not terminal but some people find it irritating .
I think you have a definite advantage 'cos you 'know' the bike and can do a direct comparison with yours .
I always think you can tell a lot from the general care of the bike , is it clean and cared for , has it been loved , any damage to the frame , is the oil a nice colour or like tar , is the seller an 'idiot' or a reasonable genuine guy?
Make sure the bike is stone cold when he starts it for you , touch the engine (carefully) to make sure , in fact call ahead and ask. Once it's warmed up properly , switch it off and restart it . Does it struggle to start? May be the starter clutch/damper , can be confused with duff battery , but is a LOT more hassle .
Finally , go with your gut feeling , if you ain't happy , walk!

Haynes manual states US CBR1000F 49-state model engine VIN numbers :-

1988 CBR1000F-J SC21E-2100001 to 2103504
1988 CBR1000F-J SC21E-2100001 to 2103504
Quote :- The engine VIN is stamped into the crankcase ........on 1000 models it is situated on the front edge of the crankcase next to the crankcase mating surfaces . The VIN is made up of a model code , a serial code the model year and the manufacturers identification .
