2nd gear issues on a 97 cbr 600
Good morning all, my name is Matt and I have my first cbr 600. It has some issues when I got it as of poor mainteance but after fixing everything else, I test rode last night. It has the smoken joes motor on it and when I shift to 2nd gear it jumps and I can here the chain slap. It seems like its goiing into gear ok but it jumps and I can hear noise from the motor. Am I screwed or can this be adjustment to shifter linkage. Love the bike but the guy I got it from didnt take care of it. Peace to you all.
Welcome to the forum Matt!
Good luck getting it figured out. Have you checked your chain for bound links? Hard to say what else it could be with the information provided....

Hi, Demon. Thanks for answering. I am haveing a hard time explaning I guess. The bike jumps like its going out and in gear. Seems like the trans is missing or not going into gear all the way. It shifts 1 up and 5 down. Do you think it could be a lenkage adjustment? The chain and sproket is new. It shifts perfict in all other gears just 2nd is giving me trouble. Thanks for the time. Matt
Could be a trans issue I guess. You could always try adjusting the linkage. If it is 1 up and 5 down, it's a reverse shifter that is aftermarket. Something could definitely be askew there.
Sounds like a issue with the 2nd gear. Could be a fork, dog gear or both. If it is, the cost could be from $750 to over $1K to fix depending on your mechanic. You do have to split the bottom case to access the transmission gears.
Welcome to the CBR Forum Matt,
Good luck fixing your 600 - I think the guys comments above are on the money. Start with adjusting your linkage, I may not be pressing second all the way home, then 'snaps' into place when power is applied. Or (and the answer you don't want to hear) there is a problem with second in the gearbox.
Let us know how you go.
Cheers, SB
