I have a street plated kx250 2t that is a blast around town and am building a kx500 2t motard right now. There is nothing more fun that a 2 stroke motocross bike on the road. Does not help at all in the licence department because you can wheelie anywhere anytime.

Have you checked out the ADV rider forum? Lots of info there if you can't get the answers you need here... Don't for bringing up another forum

On open roads they are screaming along. Mine will do 100 mph with the mods I've done to it but its lungs (lung, singular lol) are hanging out. It cruises nicely at 70 and when I look down that's usually what I'm doing even in a 55. It doesn't feel like 70, it feels more like 45. <--No joking here!

Around town you need to be very careful. They come off the line very quickly because they are light, geared low and have most of their grunt in low rpm's. The first time my son took mine out I warned him about the 30MPH zones. When he came back, he got off and reported that I was 100% right. He looked down and found the clock reading 55 in a 30 more than once. It is almost agonizing trying to go 30.

Tire choice on thumpers is a huge deal. When trying them out, its huge. When I got mine it had knobbies. SCAREY!... In the rain....DEADLY SCARY. My son dropped it at over 50 while making a right hand turn. He didn't realize how fast he was going and knobbies-no-turn.

Shanko makes a great Dual Sport tire , I have them and now the bike lays way down and still works 85% in the mud. The Shanko's are 80/20. The knobbies I had were 10/90.

The knobbies showed 50% wear at around 300 miles. The road eats them like Mama Cass eating a ham sandwich.

EDIT: I was out in the garage and happened to look over at the DR and remembered something. I should mention that some make somewhat good cold weather rides. Mine has the radiator shrouds and number-plate/headlight doohickey. I also installed hand guards that double as wind deflectors in cold conditions. Not real good but far better than a naked bike. Something to think about when looking.
Agree with the speed, man. I wring my KLR's neck all time, everywhere I go.
And it will do 125 for sure.

On tires...you're right. The dunlop k750s that came on mine are pretty knobby, but they grip surprisingly well. But like you said, too... they're gone quick when you're ***** to the wall all the time. I think I got 2k out of my rear.

The newer KLRs are a lot better in the aero department as well. They're not like a naked bike at all, and the aftermarket hand guards help a lot, too.

Oh, and the KTMs look pretty cool and they seem nice, but they're not cheap.
I think the ones I looked at were around $10,000 for a 350/500cc street legal dirt bike. About twice as much as the honda and kawi 650s.

Is that new or used? I've seen some pretty nice 990 Adventures going for around that price (used of course), but believe that would be overkill for what Sprock is looking for.
I know their 525 motor isn't bad. I had a friend that raced ATV's and his Polaris 525 Outlaw had a KTM mill in it...

Lightbulb another dirty idea

Okay latest idea KTM 650 LC4 ..... older one ..... I know I'm drinking
the orange Kool Aid here but they seem bullet proof even tho the early
ones had main bearing issues. I can see myself churning up the woods
out back real good on this. Anyone know much about the LC4 I hear it's
a solid motor ?

I have come to the realization - I can't pull the trigger on an off the showroom floor spank me new
bike there by losing 2 grand quicker than you can say "marco" !

I think that will do the PDT just fine. Don't know about dealerships for parts but I get most if not all off the net anyway. The bag bars will work great for tent and all too.

Got to agree with going used. Why spend money on something your gonna down and it will see the ground. If you have to baby a new bike your not having fun. Best part of a dualy, ride um like their stolen.
