Let me just add before someone jumps in to split hairs.

We're talking about swapping like exhaust for like exhaust (pipes and mufflers) and not of course removing factory intalled emmision control devices requied by state or federal law such as cats, egrs etc and not replacing them at all.

Too late.

A cali muffler only needs to meet 95db standards IIRC.

An EPA compliant exhaust from Yosh for example, on thier 'street' versions, are only ever claimed to be noise compiant. They never test or certify for emmisions. If they don't meet EPA noise compliance then they are sold as "Race only".

i think we are talking about a full system. emissions garb and everything. why else would it not be approved for street use?

no split hairs though..... lol (i did vote for you in the rotm war and stood with t, so be cool)
hahahaha
my point is that some govt dept needs the money, i mean, to claim it approved. so stupid.

Nothing wrong with simple debate, all in good fun.

I can only speak to the question of why Yosh specs race only. They do that for noise compliance.

The bigger more complicated question is if your removing emmision systems from your bike. That is a whole bigger can of worms but the absolute bottom line there, is no matter what you do you bike has to pass a real life emmision test to be legal in states that require it.

And this why you wont see 'emmision' certified exhaust because that is just one part of the complete vehicle system. If your 'race only' system passes a local emmsion test your legal. But even a supposed certified system could still fail based on other engine factors.

Whether it be car or bike, if your pulling off the CAT then yes, you absolutely have to put a CAT back on of its not legal no matter what parts you put in place of it. If that makes sence.

I could be wrong but in the case of California, any manufacturer claiming to make exhaust component 'legal' for street use would most likely designate 49 state legal and/or legal or specifically legal use in California. Just like many cars and bikes themselves.

coulda fooled me...

cali is strange. we have all the special emissions stuff on bikes, but the never check it again. there are not any bike inspections here.
as far as exhausts and california go, the law reads that you are not allowed to modify the exhaust on a pollution controlled vehicle. the noise tickets don't usually hold up due to the fact that it needs to be measured loud at a certain distance for fairly long time ( like 15min or something.) they just claim the modded exhaust thing instead. even putting a chrome tip could be considered a modification, but thats a stretch if a cop is having a bad day.

but all that doesn't matter to HK, he is in NC....

Every state is different , Im sure Cali is the worst. When I lived in NY, they did put your vehicle on an analyzer every year to check emmisions.

Here in Florida, there are no inspections but they write noise violations all day long in CFL. Not only vehicular but car stereo as well. When I lived in Daytona, they bust your chops for both night and day.

Im sure the OP needs only worry about noise and he can probably figure out how tough they are there pretty easy.

Its not a big deal unless you have an over built race motor, your DBs will not reach high enough to matter...
