Speedometer Problems

Yesterday I installed a new BMC Race Air filter on my 06 CBR 600RR. After the install I went out for a ride and noticed that the speedometer was not working correctly. For an example, while riding at 30 mph and thento gofaster like 50 mph it would just jump in numbers and skip all numbers from 30-50 and just show 50mph. When I got home and rode again a few hours later it stopped doing it. I just don't want it to do it again so anyone have any ideas on what would have caused this? I did not unplug any wiresduring the install of the filter also, just moved them around to fit the filter in the air box.Thanks.

It sounds like a loose connection in the wiring harness as you described moving wires around... either that, or there is some ferrous debris stuck to your speedo pickup.
My dad's VW wagon was throwing CEL codes that said the cam timing sensor was faulty. VW kept resetting the codes, saying this was normal. Three visits later, someone finally went and looked, and there was a piece of ferrous casting flash that had attached itself to the cam timing pickup (magnetic). Debris removed, no more CEL codes.
Any inductive pickup like that will be thrown off if there is debris that has attached itself via magnetism.
But the most obvious and likely culprit is loose wiring connections, as mentioned already.

yeah, I agree with the blonde weasel..
If its not a loose connection, its gotta be the pickup.
My wifes 636 had an issue with that. What had happended was the pickup is on the front sprocket cover, it was full of chain lube and dirt. Once it was clean, worked like a charm. If Im not mistaken, I think yours in the same place. I'd pull it and clean it. Its the easiest of the two things to do. Only take a few minutes.
