when i get on it its all good when i let off and get back on it, it slams forward like there is too much space between the drive gears. is there any way to tighten that up?

could it maybe be your chain slack? It does that when your chain is loose, or even in spec... it takes a bit to catch up cause when you get on it its on full tight up top, then you let off, full tight on bottom, get on it its gotta pic up all that slack so youll get a split second of lash then pffft, your gone.... good luck

i dont think my riding style has anything to do with it ive rode many bikes but none with quite as much freeplay. the chain makes sense but its fairly new and tight. im almost positive it is in the tranny. is it a cbr thing that im not aware of?

A '90 CBR600 ... hmmm, I've not noticed the CBR's having more lash than other bikes. If your chain is adjusted correctly then it could be that you got some wear in the tranny. How many miles on your bike?

That's not a lot of miles to have a tranny related issue. Not saying it couldn't happen but I imagine the bike would have to be ridden really hard to have such an issue.

How about this ... with the engine off put the bike in first and roll it forward until it stops then roll it backwards until it stops. What is this distance? If it's more than 4 inches then you've got something going on in the tranny. Otherwise I'd be inclined to check the clutch springs and pads.
