My friend just sold his 650R to another friend and it's no performer. Nice bike, but not a track bike. More geared towards touring or sport tourer. It's got some bottom end power from the parallel twin, but nothing substantial.

the funny thing is, is that you would think it would actually be a good race form looking at the specs ( fuel injection,DOHC,liquide cooled ect.) but it only puts out 65 hp at the rear wheel! compared to the 100 hp the F4i puts out!

I test rode the 650 this spring... I was originally looking for a VFR and thought that the 650 might be a nice alternative (cheaper in many many ways)

Wow - that engine didn't perform. For the displacement and design there must be alot of hp hidden in there somewhere... I've ridden smaller displacement bikes before and know what they feel like (quick for their displacement) but I was soo surprised to find that my ancient xj650 was kicking out really comparable numbers over a wider rpm range. This bike needed another 10-20hp to get interest from older tourers... at the moment it is aimed at beginners. For a beginner this is a great bike as you *Could* do anything with it for many years.

Any 600 vs the 650 will be a cake walk for the 600... my old zx600r C8 would have eaten it alive.

The thing with that 650 is that is a good beginner bike - but it has some odd things like the handlebar position that just didn't work for me. Suspension wise it was actually pretty well done. It would make a great tourer, BUT they have to do a better job with luggage accomidation (tank is hard to put a bag on and the tail is shaped like a tear drop so that it's hard to put tail bags on... you'd need some rigid hardware and that wasn't available yet when I was looking.

Kawi will either bump up the hp, make a bigger displacement version, or fix this one... in all honesty for most people this *Could* have been the sensible choice. Look what's happened to other great bikes like the Hawk (way way too early for it's time).. or Kawi's concours - functionally a great bike but I could bring myself to buy one.

What you've got to give Kawi credit for - they tried to make an entry level bike, that was comfortable, stable, with a good range, and had fuel injection. They tried to make a bike for the rider, as opposed to the look or hp race. The sad thing is that hp/looks sells bikes even when sometimes a more suited bike exists for everyday riders. Hopefully this won't scare other manufactures off making this type of decision.

Thats all good Information, my friend bought a Ninja 650R about 2 months ago and he talked this and that, about how his bike was fater than my 05 Katana 600. I sold the Kat about 2 months ago and i just bought a 02 F4I 600 about 2 weeks ago, and he is still telling people his bike is faster than my new bike. So i challenged him to a taped Race, best 2 out of 3.

well, your going to win 3 of 3 not even trying! no wait! you should let him win the first one to make him feel like hes going to win then just SMOKE him the next 2! that would be very funny.
